"Gems: Lily May Ledford" is available from Ms. Ledford's granddaughter, Cari Norris of Louisville, KY. Norris has made a labor of love out of compiling this from rare recordings from 1965-1983. It includes 17 songs -- some choice stuff, including a haunting version of "Red Rocking Chair" -- and five monologues that tell some of the history of the Coon Creek Girls, their White House performance etc. E-mail me if you're interested in ordering information.

Hi, Guest - sounds like that might be a great recording, but you forgot to give us your e-mail address. I did some searching, and found a photograph (click) of Lily May Ledford, and also a photo (click) of Cari Norris and banjo. Also this page has some stuff ablout Lily May Ledford.

I found several mentions of Lily May Ledford and Cari Norris, but no website where a person could get Cari's recordings.

I heard Cari talk about these recordings a couple of weeks ago at the Kentucky Music Weekend where she performed. (also Jean Ritchie and Bill Staines). If we don't hear again from Guest, and if someone wants the recording, I can probably locate more info.

Lily May Ledford sings four of the extra songs added to fill out the Rounder CD titled The Martins and the Coys (ROUNDER 1819). This is a "ballad opera" produced in 1944 with Will Geer, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Lily May Ledford, Burl Ives, Hally Wood and others. After the conclusion of the play, Lily May Ledford sings "East Virginia Blues," "Sugar babe," "Gypsy Davy," and The Girls in This Neighborhood." Camsco.com can get this one for you.

Question: Does Cari Norris have a CD of her own, as well as the Lily May Ledford one?

Sandy - I don't know if Cari has a CD of her own. I only heard her talk about the recordings of her grandmother, Lily May.

I'm almost certain she hasn't recorded her own stuff, but if somebody can talk her into it, sign me up. That one she does about the two sisters (not Wind and Rain, but close to it) is about the sweetest song I've ever heard about sisterly jealousy and murder. -- Pinetop Slim (formerly Markf)
