Subject: Thought for the Day - Aug 10,00 From: Peter T. Date: 10 Aug 00 - 08:44 AM I am invited to lunch by an eminent colleague in environmental studies who lives next door to one of my favourite parks in the city. He suggests that after lunch we go for a walk. We set out and he walks through the park at top speed, up hill and down dale. My preferred speed for a walk through a park is crawling, stopping to check the undergrowth, seeing what new things may be happening, stopping to register the colours and smells, and dawdling. I am somewhat stuck because he is a friend of mine, but at one point I laughingly say: "Oh, why don't you go on ahead, and I'll catch up", and he looks at me slightly embarrassed and slows down to 25mph as opposed to 60, and he is made anxious by being too slow, and he is still far to fast for me, so we are both at the wrong speed. We make it to the end of the walk, and continue our discussion for a few moments. I leave and think to myself: he will now always characterize me as a hopeless dawdler, and I will always characterize him as someone who really has no interest in the natural world, and we will both be right. At least we are not married to each other!!! |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day - Aug 10,00 From: Little Neophyte Date: 10 Aug 00 - 11:13 AM Well Peter I have experienced the same problem and to make matters worse, I was married to him. Seems all my mates have always plowed ahead of me as if we were in Boot Camp training or something. I have a good friend who would love to go for a walk with me and chat. 'Let's Do Coffee or Lunch or Dinner' I say. Socializing while going for a walk just doesn't work well for me. Walking is somewhat of a meditative time for me. Getting into the rhythm of my body and being closely aware of my surroundings. Although I have enjoyed the company of some who can walk at my pace, share our time together silently in the same appreciation of the amazing life force all around us. Bonnie

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day - Aug 10,00 From: Sorcha Date: 10 Aug 00 - 11:17 AM I'm with Peter and Bonnie on this one. Stop and smell....see, think. Daughter and I love to go for long, slow walks late at night. The world is so different after dark, and we walk for hours without saying a word to each other. |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day - Aug 10,00 From: Bert Date: 10 Aug 00 - 11:33 AM That's the difference between a walk and a stroll Peter. I enjoy both, I walk if I'm going somewhere or need the exercise and I don't stroll nearly enough. Now you've made me want to dig out my camera and a close-up lens and do some SERIOUS strolling. Bert. |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day - Aug 10,00 From: MMario Date: 10 Aug 00 - 11:52 AM I think Bert has hit it one the head for many people "walking" is excercise, and meant to be done briskly, but "strolling" would be for pleasure. And you never know, instead of thinkig you were a dawdler, your friend may just think you are incurably out of shape. |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day - Aug 10,00 From: tar_heel Date: 10 Aug 00 - 04:06 PM a good morning walk clears your head....opens up your mind, gets your creative juices flowing....gets your cardiovascular system going........ so,whats wrong with that? |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day - Aug 10,00 From: Little Neophyte Date: 10 Aug 00 - 04:15 PM I guess for me whether I am strolling or walking to keep in shape, I find that time spent sacred. BB |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day - Aug 10,00 From: katlaughing Date: 10 Aug 00 - 04:58 PM I mosey, always have...there's too much to see, too much to look at and wonder, too much I might miss, if I sped on by. That and I am physically bound to go slowly anyway. On the highway, I don't mind high speed, but when we get on backroads, Rog always wants to drive too fast and I want to go really, really slowly, so I don't miss anything. Mom always called it "stopping to smell the roses" and life just isn't worth it if we cannot do that. katmeandering |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day - Aug 10,00 From: Peter T. Date: 11 Aug 00 - 03:49 PM I was only suggesting that you seem to be carrying on a very intimate tete-a-tete in the midst of generic thoughts for the day. It is no big deal, I don't own the space, we can all scroll along past your fascinating love affair swiftly and happily. But why not set up a Chuck Hemrick's Thoughts about his Presumptive Beloved for the Day? Then you can have a rose-covered thread all to yourselves....Far be it from me to squelch love's sweet dream.... yours, Peter T. |
