Subject: Indian Summer From: Wolfgang Date: 23 Aug 00 - 07:08 AM Well, I don't even know, if Indian Summer is the title of the song I'm looking for. I am actually looking for the American original to the German song Heute hier, morgen dort. I have it in several songbooks and all of them agree that the original writer of both English lyrics and tune was Gary Bolstadt. Some say he's American. The small print of one of the books can be read to mean the original title was 'Indian Summer'. I'd love to see the original lyrics. Perhaps my retranslation of first verse and chorus into English helps to find the song (German lyrics and chords if you follow the link):
Today here, tomorrow there,
Chorus: Sometimes I've bad dreams I have not the slightest idea whether this is a difficult question or not. Thnaks for trying. Wolfgang |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Indian Summer From: Brendy Date: 23 Aug 00 - 07:23 AM Well, These guys recorded it, and as you can see Hannes Wader and Gary Bolstadt are both credited with the song. As you've probably noticed yourself, there are loads of different permutations, linking to no small amount of sites, out there in cuckoo-land. I have to go and 'do things' soon, but I'll give it a dacent look later on. B. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Indian Summer From: Benjamin Date: 24 Aug 00 - 05:44 AM I believe Indian Summer was the tittle of an album put out by Go West, and 80's pop band. Ah, the precious memories of the 80's |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Indian Summer From: Brendy Date: 24 Aug 00 - 02:42 PM You're very shaggin' quick to find two year old articles in questionable Irish newspapers, which are inconclusive, and uses phrases such as 'circumstantial', 'appear to have been', 'seemed', 'indications' etc. Find your own feckin English words, Wolfgang, and don't have people running around doing messages for you while you sit there and scratch your arse. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Indian Summer From: Joe Offer Date: 25 Aug 00 - 05:18 AM Well, Wolfgang, the "Indian Summer" I'm familiar with is here (click). Mind you, I'm not as old as the song. Really, I'm not. But I suppose that's not at all the song you're seeking. I looked at the German lyrics, and it doesn't ring a bell. Doesn't sound at all like anything I know. There is no listing for songwriters named Wader or Bolstadt at ASCAP or BMI, so I think they may not be from the U.S. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Indian Summer From: Wolfgang Date: 25 Aug 00 - 06:03 AM Thanks, Joe, but you're right that the song is wrong. I havn't found the name Gary Bolstadt on my searches outside of German pages. Funny. I'll try some other methods of search and'll let you know if I hit. Wolfgang |

Subject: Heute Hier, Morgen Dort From: Joe Offer Date: 30 Aug 00 - 06:24 PM Well, Wolfgang, I finally found some information for you, and then it took me half an hour to find this thread. You can find a MIDI and MP3 of the song here (hier). I found the song in a songbook called Das Folk-Buch by Peter Burshch, published in 1979 by Voggenreiter Verlag. Das Lied is vergleichbar mit "Streets of London" oder "City of New Orleans."I found another site here (hier) that refers to Bolstad's tune as "Indian Summer." I gather that the tune may have no lyrics - and that it may never have made it to the U.S. Alles gute. -Joe- |

Subject: Lyr Add: INDIAN SUMMER (Gary D. Bolstad) From: Wolfgang Date: 05 Sep 07 - 09:12 AM Having heard nothing from Gary I just assume he doesn't mind. Wolfgang INDIAN SUMMER Summer days turning cold Summer leaves turn to gold Summer love gone to sea Summer birds sound the cry Restless wings beat the sky In their flight from the winter's decree Empty room where she slept Near the shelf where she kept Her dreams and her fears Empty space where she lay With her head turned away As the dawn kissed the leaves with its tears The threads of our lives have become so entwined The weave of their fiber lies close 'round my mind And the wonder of her standing there by the shore Comes back to my mind as I pass by her door Empty street where we walked Empty bridge where we talked In the dusk and the rain Crimson clouds gone to gray Mourned the death of the day As the shadows went softly insane Summer leaves gone to brown Morning frost chills the town With a crystalline shroud Winter's long, icy hands Freeze the life from the land Summer's face getting lost in the crowd The threads of our lives have become so entwined The weave of their fiber lies close 'round my mind And the wonder of her standing there by the shore Comes back to my mind as I pass by her door (Copyright by Gary D. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Indian Summer (Gary Bolstad) From: GUEST,Gary Bolstad Date: 31 Oct 07 - 12:41 AM Here are a few more additions to the general knowledge pool: You can hear Hannes Wader singing Indian Summer with my original lyrics on his CD "Wünsche,", Verlag Pläne (2001) and also a free, singable translation of Heute hier, Morgen dort, that I did for Hannes, which I named "Day to Day," and which he indluded on his CD "Auftritt: Hannes Wader," Verlag Pläne (1998). Here are the lyrics for "Day to Day" (copyright Gary D. Bolstad/Krikit Music) Day to day, town to town, Sing my songs, travel on It's a choic that I made long ago Yesterday or tomorrow, My time's mine to borrow Or share, till again I must go But sometimes, when my dreams Start to haunt me, it seems I should try settling down, For a change, in some town, But the years and the days Pass me by, go their ways, And the changes are all that remain. Though the folk I have met, (Ah, how soon!) they forget When I've moved on to some other place, There may be one or two, When I've played and passed through, Who'll remember my song or my face. But sometimes, when my dreams Start to haunt me, it seems I should try settling down, For a change, in some town, But the years and the days Pass me by, go their ways, And the changes are all that remain. Plese don't ask me to say Why I've chosen this way: It's just too hard for me to explain, For the places I've been And the changes I've seen Tell me nothing I know stays the same |
