Subject: 'You are always close to me'
From: Ed Pellow
Date: 28 Aug 00 - 01:36 PM

I'm looking for the words and hopefully music for a song I used to hear in church when I was young.

The first verse starts with the words "I watch the sunrise"

Each successive verse is (I think) about a time of the day, with the last verse being about watching the sunset.

The chorus is something like:

"For you are always close to me
Following all my ways, Lord."

That's all I can remember. Any help with words, chords or melody (I can vaguely remember the tune)or any other information, would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Ed

Well Ed, so far I can only find the last verses as used in a blessing....suppose it's a start!!
I think it's the same as yours, I can remember singing it in the my previous church. Will keep looking for the rest of it!

I watch the sunset fading away,
lighting the clouds with sleep.
And as the evening closes its eyes,
I feel your presence near me.

For you are always close to me
following all my ways.
May I be always close to you,
following all your ways Lord.

I watch the moonlight guarding the night,
waiting till morning comes.
The air is silent earth is at rest -
only your peace is near me. yes, you are always near me.

best wishes, Yvonne

Subject: Lyr Add: I WATCH THE SUNRISE (Glynn/Murphy)
From: GUEST,mac3
Date: 01 Feb 06 - 09:12 PM

I WATCH THE SUNRISE.

1. I watch the sunrise lighting the sky,
Casting its shadow near.
And on this morning bright though it be,
I feel those shadows near me.

CHORUS: But you are always close to me
Following all my ways.
May I be always close to you.
Following all your ways, Lord.

2. I watch the sunlight shine through the clouds,
Warming the earth below.
And at the mid-day, life seems to say:
"I feel your brightness near me."

CHORUS: For you are always...

3. I watch the sunset fading away,
Lighting the clouds with sleep.
And as the evening closes its eyes,
I feel your presence near me.

CHORUS: For you are always...

4. I watch the moonlight guarding the night,
Waiting till morning comes.
The air is silent, earth is at rest -
Only your peace is near me.

CHORUS: Yes, you are always...

No disrespect to Daniel O'Donnell, but I don't really like his version of this hymn. Want it at my wedding this year, and was wondering if there is a sample of it anywhere online, where he isn't the artist?

we played this song at my Dad's funeral this year and though heartbreaking it was beautiful and so appropriate. Lots of people mentioned it afterwards and I keep the lyrics on my fridge door. Sounds a bit mad when I say it like that. I wonder if you have a copy of the song that could be emailed to me I would be so grateful if anyone could do that. Many thanks tewkie@yahoo.com

This song reminds me of God's faithfulness and how much he strengthened me when I was so alone and sad in the UK and I went to a church and the choir sung it one winter morning when the pain of loneliness was becoming unbearable.
Today i am teaching the rest of my choir in Uganda the song. thanks alot

Daniel O'Donnell, I think is mince, he's too clean for my liking, he's not even human, but I do like some of the songs that he 'sings' he's good at some but terrible at others.

Since the song is still under copyright, it's unlikely that the sheet music is available anywhere for free download.

However, I WATCH THE SUNRISE has been published in several songbooks.

Here is a vendor that has them: MusicRoom. There may be others.

Since Daniel O'Donnell didn't write this song, I'd suggest his name doesn't properly belong in the heading to this thread, anymore than it would if it were about Johnny B Goode, which he has also recorded.

Thanks, McGrath.

A web site about Fr. John Glynn says this:
While studying at St. John's Seminary, Wonersh, near Guildford in Surrey, John met a fellow student, Colin Murphy, and together they wrote three songs, John providing the words for Colin's melodies. The third song, written in January 1970, was "Close To You (I watch the sunrise)". Since then, the song has featured on radio and television, in concerts and churches all around the world, including the score of an Australian film, an album of Daniel O'Donnell, "Faith and Inspiration", a 2004 episode of "Coronation Street" (Britain's longest running TV soap opera), and the BBC Three 2005 documentary, "Gypsy Wars".
Note that if this is correct, we also have the title wrong.

We had this hymn at my daughter's wedding, 13 years ago; she wanted it as she had sung it regularly at her school. Last month we also had it at my mother's funeral, down in Cornwall and my father has been inundated with requests for it from people who came; the rather strange thing about this, is that they moved to Cornwall over 20 years ago from Wickford in Essex, and their parish church there was Our Lady of Good Counsel...............

I heard this song in 1977 at a Presbyterian church in Scotland while I was studying there for five weeks. I got the music and had it sung at my wedding the next year. It stays with you. I have never heard it again here in the US.( I am Catholic-probably part of the reason!) The internet has finally made it possible to find the lyrics, and hopefully the performance as well.
I still can't sing it all the way through with tears.
Thanks to you all for your comments; it would be a lovely hymn at a funeral.
