Thanks for the interest, Toronto area folks. Why don't you all get yourselves a convoy? It's about a (reasonably pleasant) 3.5 hour drive from the big smoke to downtown McDonalds Corners. And I know Bonnie's serious about going, if anyone's looking for ride-sharing. (Rick is playing in Ottawa Saturday so will be leaving Fri or Sat).

Have some great memories from Orillia. My first ever pro travelling gig was to a place called Owaissa Lodge (sp?) about 32 years ago. Ended up in a canoe on the lake with two others at 3 am. singing (fake) Gregorian chants!

McDonald's Corners will be a first. Lookin' forward to it. Also Sydenham on Saturday.

Gotta remember to bring my kazoo for LittleHawk to look at.

Enh, PT, you Torontonians are so provincial.

Its easy to find McDonalds Corners--I do it every day!

From Hwy 7 in Perth, (if you pass McDonalds going eastwards, you've gone too far already) ya go north on 511 8 km, left at Balderson, 1 km and take the first right, go through Fallbrook, left on Cty Rd 12. Go 9 Km and you're in the Corners. Take the first left (9th line) as you enter the village and The Schoolhouse is on your left.

Theres a map and all that stuff on the schoolhouse website.

Yeah, what's up with that Sydenham biz Rick? I thought Rick was doing two gigs in Ottawa on the 23rd.

If anybody really cares, there is no McDonalds in McDonalds Corners. (And as far as I know, there are no McDonalds either.)

The nearest McD's, in Perth, has absolutely nothing to distinguish it from any other Rotten Ronnies, anywhere.

South Porcupine is actually near Timmins, about twelve hours drive north of here.

Unfortunately I'm living in Cape Breton now and can't make it. While maybe I shouldn't say unfortunately - it's a good thing on the whole - but in this microsituation I regret not being able to go to the show.

Well, I hope to visit my Mom in Perth sometime this winter, so next time I'll get the scoop from you on what's going on. I wouldn't playing Maple Sugar with you either. My visits home have been pretty dry musically speaking since Tianakeem's closed down.

I'm working on it Rick, sitting right here with a kitchen full of fresh veggies and a hot cup of tea. Last night's performance was wondeful. I envy all those who will get to see Rick this next weekend. At one point when Rick was playing slide the woman next to sighed and said, "I can hear the words." Marvelously expressive music. Thank you, Rick.

PS. The rosewood kazoo is also very nice.

Well, showtime is today. I'm always edgy these mornings. (Will anyone come to the show?)

Called Fielding last night before he played at Rasputins. Sure enough he had lost or forgotten the directions to McDonalds Corners. Heather, next time pin them to his gig bag or something...if he's spent 30 years on the road, it was probably cause he was lost. I can picture it. "What town is this? Never mind, can I play a gig while I'm here?"

Sorry Rick, just kiddin, did I mention I was edgy?

Chris Coole is driving up from Toronto today too, so there's two Torontonians converging on the Corners. I have to go check the homing beacon now... (we were just watching "The Last Flight of Amelia Earhart"--the batteries ran out on the homing beacon set up for her, and look how that turned out...)

Nah, IT'LL BE GREAT. At least I set up the sound in advance and made sure the (second) new board worked. Previous one was DOA, a situation discovered when we tried to have a coffeehouse...

Show went great. My gosh, where do I start. Comfortably full house, new sound system worked smoothly...performers and front house help showed up in good time, and everybody was transfixed by wonderful performances. Dan and Chris did an engaging set of old to new bluegrass, joined by a wonderful fiddler named Erin. I've never seen Rick in concert before and he sure knows how to make a set happen--it's kind of an extension of his Mudcat personality. He had all the other performers sitting in with him on various numbers. He was really happy to be playing in an old one-room schoolhouse, remarking that it was a traditional venue for the music he plays.

This whole big deal was played out for an audience of about 40 lucky attendees, which is a near-full house (well, it's a classroom!). Talk about microeconomics.

Afterwards we repaired to Dan's mom's farmhouse on the (rugged) north shore for a great meal and jam. Aside from the performance itself, this was the big payoff for me--I don't often get to sit down in a roomful of great musicians and have an instant band that feels totally natural.

Last I saw of Rick, I scrawled out a map to show him how to find Highway 7...and away went the troubadour into the North Shore Night. (That's the shore of Dalhousie Lake.)

Rick, I told ya to turn left at the end of the driveway. You obviously turned right, went through the spooky woods with all the hand-splattered No Trespazzin This Meens Yoo signs that the old hermit put up before his mysterious disappearnce,, then following my directions turned right on the Robertson Lake road, twenty miles of gravel about as straight as G W Bush's autobiography and are now up in a tree somewhere near Matawatchewan...

Guess I'll try to practice my cartography a bit before the next hapless folksinger ventures through here...

Hey Willie-o! I plan to be based in Perth between December 27 and January 1. Do you have any gigs in that time? Or might you be interested in playing together a little in some living room or other? If so, PM me and we can exchange contact info.

Also, I expect to do some steel-string guitar shopping in Ottawa while I'm there. Are there any stores (or specific guitars) you want to recommend? I'm thinking of spending about 400-500 dollars, and will give special consideration to a less-than-dreadnought size (should that be called a dreadsome?).
