Subject: GOD LEADS US ALONG From: wysiwyg Date: 12 Sep 00 - 04:08 PM This hymn is a new one to me but must be a classic to others out there. It sings so pretty, like breathing. I will post a tune when I can, or a link to a sound clip if I find one. It is on the southern gospel tapes I have offered to lend. Maybe some evening I will do some of these I have been posting, at HearMe. (Joe Offer, I leave categories to the harvesters, since I know you are working on the categories themselves, or plan to.) ~S~

Go to: http://tch.simplenet.com/htm/g/godleads.htm They play it there faster than I have heard it. I am sorry not to blue-clicky that, or paste in the new verse. I have less free time than before. ~S~ |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Add: GOD LEADS US ALONG From: Parson Date: 13 Sep 00 - 12:45 AM Hi Praise, you are correct. This song has been around a long time, but it must have appeared in some of the Gospel Songs type books, It isn't in any of the Baptist Hymnals going all the way back to the 1940 Broadman Hymnal, but I remember hearing it all my life & I'm almost as old as that Hymnal! The way I remember it, you sing the Verse at a medium tempo, as smoothly & gently as possible. Sing the first 2 lines of the chorus with more energy, but begin to slow down on the 3rd line of the chorus & slower & slower & softer & softer to the end. But the best thing about this song is the words. How true they are! Randall |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Add: GOD LEADS US ALONG From: Dale Rose Date: 13 Sep 00 - 08:09 AM I have several versions of this, but it is going to take me some time to get at it. Don't expect anything soon. One version is by Rev. Joseph Callender on How Can I Keep From Singing, Vol 1, Yazoo 2020. Another is a fairly recent version by a group from here in Arkansas, The Larry Nelson Family, and I think I have another version as well, but can't remember for sure.
When I see the Nelsons next, probably in the next week or so and most certainly within a month, I will ask what their printed source was. As far as the tune goes, Praise ~~ doesn't CyberHymnal do sheetmusic as well, at least if you have the proper software to read it? |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Add: GOD LEADS US ALONG From: wysiwyg Date: 13 Sep 00 - 07:39 PM Dale, you are probably right. This is a good place to say something about how I am posting these, which is from work. Until I replace the home computer, hopefully by the first of the year, I am lacking the ability to bookmark anything the easy way and so bopping over to other resource sites is cumbersome at best. Also, site loading time is ridiculous right now, with work-computer ISP problems. So I am sharing what I can, when I can, and only within the limits of frustration, because health issues preclude my going over that line too much. But I will come back and add stuff when I get the home front organized again. Of course anything anyone else adds is great. Dale, did you want in on my tape library offer? Sounds like you have way more than I do. But the offer is open. ~S~ |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Add: GOD LEADS US ALONG From: Dale Rose Date: 13 Sep 00 - 09:28 PM Well, tempting as it is, I figure I would just be a speed bump or maybe a road block in the orderly movement from one to the other. Right now I am really busy and don't know when I'd get around to it ~~ maybe later, but thanks for the offer. Doesn't look like things will let up until November at the earliest. I have a tendency to somehow contract for more things than I can handle. |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Add: GOD LEADS US ALONG From: Parson Date: 13 Sep 00 - 10:38 PM OK Praise, I found the song in a book my wife has. The book is "Favorites: Volume II." Then the cover also has the words, "One of the "Singspiration Series." The book was compiled by Alfred B. Smith & the copyright date of the book is 1946. The song, "God Leads Us Along" has the same 4 verses that you already know with only one variation. Where you 3rd verse says, "Tho' sorrows befall us, and evils oppose..." my written source has "Tho' sorrows befall us and Satan oppose..." A very minor difference. Everything else is, I believe, word for word. You might be interested to know that the book shows the author of the text and the tune as G.A. Young with a copyright date for this song as 1930. It probably is Public Domain by now. Just two pages back in the book there is another song that I thought I would call your attention to. Do you know the song, "All That Thrills My Soul Is Jesus." It was written one year later than "God Leads Us Along" and while the words and melody are different, it has, to me, something of the same "style." By that I mean a smooth & flowing verse with a more energetic chorus. Take care. Randall |
