Subject: I'm bound for the promised land From: Banjoman_CO Date: 24 Sep 00 - 08:39 PM I have looked in the digitrad and all of the other databases that I can think of and have not found this old spiritual. It is either "I'm bound..... or "I am bound..." I don't know if this is the title or just a line from the song. I could use some help. Banjoman |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: I'm bound for the promised land From: Marymac90 Date: 24 Sep 00 - 09:46 PM There is a tune that uses this for a chorus in _The Sacred Harp_. It goes:
I am bound for the promised la-a-and, I think the third line changes with each verse, but none of the lines used are coming to me right now-sorry. Sacred Harp tunes frequently have titles that have nothing to do with the lyrics, so I'm not going to hazard a guess as to what the title actually is. Accomplished singers actually know them all by number, anyway. There is a Sacred Harp website at fasola.org If that doesn't help you, email me at Marymac90@aol.com, and I will look for my book again. I tried to find my copy yesterday and couldn't, and I'm don't even feel like trying tonight. Maybe I could find it now, since I actually cleaned house-(will wonders never cease!)-or maybe I need to look in my car again! Mary McCaffrey |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: I'm bound for the promised land From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 24 Sep 00 - 09:47 PM New additions at the Cyber Hymnal! Pardon the thread creep, but anyone who loves hymns might be interested. The Cyber Hymnal is also in the Mudcat links. I just checked the Cyber Hymnal for the first time in a few months, and they now have 1)I Vow to Thee My Country and 2)Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy (to the Beechspring tune.) Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy You have to click on the midi link at this last page to hear the Beechspring tune. It was the tune used in Ken Burns' Lewis and Clark special. I wrote to the Cyber Hymnal last year (or earlier) and asked about this tune, but they thought there were copyright problems. Since it was an old tune, it seems that it's OK. Give it a listen, it's gorgeous. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: I'm bound for the promised land From: Uncle Jaque Date: 24 Sep 00 - 09:58 PM That 3rd line is: "Oh won't you come and go with me; We are Bound for the promised land." It may well be "Jordan's Stormy Banks". I'll look it up - quite sure we have it. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: I'm bound for the promised land From: Burke Date: 25 Sep 00 - 11:36 AM The Lyr Add left the word "those" out of the 1st line of verse 2. 2. All o'er those wide extended plains shines one eternal day There God the Son forever reigns and scatters night away It should be noted that Samuel Stennett wrote the verses, but the chorus is probably from a different source. The verses are used for 6 tunes in the Sacred Harp, but only one has the Promised Land chorus. See On Jordan's stormy banks I stand at the Sacred Harp Concordance. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: I'm bound for the promised land From: Dale Rose Date: 28 Sep 00 - 12:00 AM I have added the music from Heavenly Highways, and the words from the Cyber Hymnal to my Good Old Songs pages. I Am Bound For The Promised Land Note that HH gives three verses, Uncle Jaque four, and the Cyber Hymnal seven.
Thanks to Uncle Jaque and all the others who brought this fine old hymn back to us! |
