Sounds like Child #20, also known as The Cruel Mother. Sets of lyrics here, , here, and here. RealAudio of Joan singing it so you can check which version you want here. I couldn't get it to play, though.

Sorcha,

The audio link worked fine for me, and the version required is the third link you provided.

So here it is (said in some trepidation as I never trust the 'pre' tag):

There was a fair maid lived in the north Oh the rose and the linsey oh She fell in love with her father's clerk Down by the greenwood side oh

He courted her a year and a day Oh the rose and the linsey oh 'Til her, the young man did betray Down by the greenwood side oh

She'd leaned her back against the thorn Oh the rose and the linsey oh And there two bonny boys she's borne Down by the greenwood side oh

She's taken out her little knife Oh the rose and the linsey oh And she's run them off their life Down by the greenwood side oh

As she walked by her father's wall Oh the rose and the linsey oh She saw her two bonny boys playin' ball Down by the greenwood side oh

Oh bonny boys if you were mine Oh the rose and the linsey oh I'd dress you up in silks so fine Down by the greenwood side oh

Oh mother dear, when we were thine Oh the rose and the linsey oh You did not treat us then so fine Down by the greenwood side oh

Now bonny boys, come tell to me Oh the rose and the linsey oh What sort of death I'll have to die Down by the greenwood side oh

Seven years of fish in the fire Oh the rose and the linsey oh And seven years of bird in the wood Down by the greenwood side oh

Seven years up hung in the warning bell Oh the rose and the linsey oh And seven years in the flames of hell Down by the greenwood side oh

Welcome, welcome fish in the fire Oh the rose and the linsey oh And welcome, welcome bird in the wood Down by the greenwood side oh

Welcome, come to the warning bell Oh the rose and the linsey oh Well what saved me from the flames of hell Down by the greenwood side oh Down by the greenwood side

Zeb

What did I tell you? The 'pre' tag is rubbish. Here it is in normal HTML:

Greenwood Side
(Traditional)

There was a fair maid lived in the north
Oh the rose and the linsey oh
She fell in love with her father's clerk
Down by the greenwood side oh

He courted her a year and a day
Oh the rose and the linsey oh
'Til her, the young man did betray
Down by the greenwood side oh

She'd leaned her back against the thorn
Oh the rose and the linsey oh
And there two bonny boys she's borne
Down by the greenwood side oh

She's taken out her little knife
Oh the rose and the linsey oh
And she's run them off their life
Down by the greenwood side oh

As she walked by her father's wall
Oh the rose and the linsey oh
She saw her two bonny boys playin' ball
Down by the greenwood side oh

Oh bonny boys if you were mine
Oh the rose and the linsey oh
I'd dress you up in silks so fine
Down by the greenwood side oh

Oh mother dear, when we were thine
Oh the rose and the linsey oh
You did not treat us then so fine
Down by the greenwood side oh

Now bonny boys, come tell to me
Oh the rose and the linsey oh
What sort of death I'll have to die
Down by the greenwood side oh

Seven years of fish in the fire
Oh the rose and the linsey oh
And seven years of bird in the wood
Down by the greenwood side oh

Seven years up hung in the warning bell
Oh the rose and the linsey oh
And seven years in the flames of hell
Down by the greenwood side oh

Welcome, welcome fish in the fire
Oh the rose and the linsey oh
And welcome, welcome bird in the wood
Down by the greenwood side oh

Welcome, come to the warning bell
Oh the rose and the linsey oh
Well what saved me from the flames of hell
Down by the greenwood side oh
  Down by the greenwood side

Zeb, RA loaded just fine, then told me a component or something was missing, and I figure it was an MS goof, and just didn't want to fool with it this early. Just as well not to trust the pre tag, huh? I never do either.

RA is a pain, and I have forbidden it to play anything not in its native formats!  Often, when it tells you that a component is missing, it really just wants you to upgrade to the latest version.  Winamp is more reliable and less aggressive in my experience.  Skipping the usual reminder about avoiding generic titles for new threads, I'd just add this:

There are links to all the Cruel Mother material in the DT and Forum, plus some other sites, here:  The Cruel Mother

The Baez version may have come from Ewan MacColl; certainly he used the same tune, which he learned (and may have adapted) from his aunt.  If Baez sang "fish in the fire", then somebody misunderstood somewhere along the line: "fish in the flood" is the usual traditional phrase, and retains the rhyme-scheme.

Zeb,

Just a reminder: there are lots of folks who have to pay for every minute of their connection and, as a result, don't spend much time on the net. There are folks who have day jobs and day studies and hardly any time on their hands. Finally, there are folks who don't even have a machine at home and use computer at work. Sometimes they're not allowed to send too many emails from there. (I've heard of such places, believe me.) Perhaps that's the reason why some of them don't even post a "thank you" for the help they received here. Please don't get me wrong. You're doing great job answering the requests and I'm not trying to persuade you that you or anyone who thinks alike should start emailing these folks. Just reminding :^)

Karolina

GUESTS are excused, but _PLEASE_:
- Do not name a thread "I'm looking for a song" or so. Put the name of the song instead, or people won't have any idea of what you are asking, and either not look at the thread, or look at the thread and then see they don't know that song . That's annoying.
- Do not ask to be sent lyrics via e-mail. This is a forum and everything should, or could be, interesting for anyone.
- When someone asks for lyrics, give him the lyrics, not a link! Well, you could put ALSO a link, but the requested lyrics should always be on the thread, so maybe they are also harvested.
Some useful things to know so we can make the forum more useful and keep some order.

Actually, Zeb, the <PRE> is useful. It's just that the configuration of the system here at Mudcat doesn't allow it to be effective in formatting. Not sure why, but <PRE> is a good and working system.
