Last of the Summer Wine ... does anyone recognize the jingle played so nicely on harmonica for this show? It sounds something like an easy version of the Wild Colonial Boy, but I can't be sure. (How about the Mild Colonial Boy?)

Is it actually called Last of the Summer Wine, or is there a tune by that name at all? Why is the show called Last of the Summer Wine in the first place?

is this the U.K. tv show with compo clegg etc?

if so the last of the summer wine represents using up that which you have stored in the summer of your youth,in compo's case quite a bit.

can't help on the tune tho'

I can't answer the questions but I had missread BJ in the first instance and started to try to notate the tune, so have my attempt at a MIDI of the tune or something that I hope is close enough.

Seems "Last of the Summer Wine" isn't the name of any tune except the jingle from the show, and it means what we in the US call 'over the hill'. It sounds like it would make a good song.

The show is on four nights a week here and I do enjoy it. That fellow Foggy is really funny! == Johnny

It's filmed in and around Holmfirth in West Yorkshire. I was out on a day of dance there a few years ago and saw some of the filming down by "Nora Batty's cottage". (They have the most gorgeous sound engineer! We ended up sharing some of our lunch with him).

The tune, played by Larry Adler, was specially commissioned for the series, I believe. It's been running for about 25 years now! Sadly, of course, Bill Owen has died, but the series still continues. His son is now playing his son in it!

Oh this is one of the best TV series. I saw the episode where Bill Owen's son turned up for the funeral looking just like a younger Compo! (the similarity is not really surprising I suppose, but it felt strange).

Part of the filming is done in Marsden, West Yorkshire, and Auntie Wainwrights shop is an ordinary house that they add the shopfront to, How do I know??? My SO used to live 4 doors along... The Title was originally the "working title"during filming of the first series. until they could come up with a "Real " name, but they didn't and it stuck. I have had tea in Sids cafe(now run by Ivy, his widow,)which was an Ironmongers until several series had passed,then it became a real cafe, and have a souvenier mug and plate that my SO brought back for me!!!

The tune is called the Last of the summer wine, there are words which were sung in the last episode of the latest series, at the end of Compo's funeral programme. The sheet music is available, just don't ask me where....

The words where written for the first full length film and later altered for an episode after Compo's funeral. Maybe the BBC could help?

Not only filmed in Marsden, but our house was "shot" quite a few times from the outside, and my wife and daughter had a fifteen second!!! claim to fame in one episode.(More was filmed in Marsden and up near the reservours at the back of our house than in Holmfirth especially in the later years)

We have all their autographs on a postcard given to my daughter aged about 19 months as payment! She still has it on her bedroom wall.

There is a tune which has something similar about it on a tape of John William's film music, possibly Sugarland Express. Has anyone heard it? I've been meaning to ask if anyone knew a precursor tune to both.

I believe that the theme tune for Last of the Summer Wine was written for the series by Ronnie Hazelhurst who makes a living composing TV sig tunes. I seem to remember a radio 4 programme on which he was talking about the way he worked and how the title words suggested the melody.

I saw where Ronnie Hazelhurst is credited with the score (which is always excellent) but not specifically with the jingle. In the USA these are always credited separately, even if it's the same composer.

However I can't here where the words "last of the summer wine" fit into the parsing of the tune.

I guess this is all small potatos but I do like the tune and the show! == Johnny

The latest series of Last of the Summer Wine has probably the last appearance of the late Tony Capstick in his role as the policeman in the car. Sadly he look very poorly. In addition I must admit to feeling a little let down in that the late great Thora Hird completely disappeared from the series without a single word of explanation. One would have thought that the BBC could have done something as they did for Bill Owen (Compo).

Due to the many letters we have recieved here are the lyrics written by the late Bill Owen for Ronnie Hazelhurst's theme tune.

The song was used as a fitting tribute in the funeral episode of Last of the Summer Wine.
