Subject: The guitar with the best smell? From: The Shambles Date: 09 Nov 00 - 07:24 PM Not really such a silly question. Well OK maybe it is?
ButI can always remember the smell of my first Yamaha, If I stick my nose in in now, all those memories come fooding back. Plus maybe a few new smells that have gotten in there more recently. All guitars don't smell the same do they? |

Subject: RE: The guitar with the best smell? From: MK Date: 09 Nov 00 - 07:38 PM When I stick my nose close to the sound hole of my newer Martins, the sweet, musty and somewhat overpowering smell of the rosewood, projects me onto the factory shop floor in Nazareth, PA. It's a glorious aroma! |

Subject: RE: The guitar with the best smell? From: kendall Date: 09 Nov 00 - 07:40 PM I think the cheap guitars smell best. They have more glue in them! lol |

Subject: RE: The guitar with the best smell? From: Allan C. Date: 09 Nov 00 - 07:46 PM Currently the Adventure guitar still has the scent of the slowly curing lacquer and the wood dust inside of it from the sanding I did. Each time I open the guitar case it smells WONDERFUL!! |

Subject: RE: The guitar with the best smell? From: sophocleese Date: 09 Nov 00 - 08:57 PM A friend of mine has a guitar that used to belong to a smoker. You open the case and get a whiff of an ashtray. Nice if you like it, a little off-putting if you don't. Any suggestions on removing a smell? |

Subject: RE: The guitar with the best smell? From: Little Hawk Date: 09 Nov 00 - 09:45 PM The most vital thing is that the guitar NOT be owned (or have been owned) by a smoker...or have been in too many smoky places! Other than that, a new rosewood body guitar, with just a hint of Martin guitar polish added to the wood smell is almost the ultimate olfactory delight! - LH |

Subject: RE: The guitar with the best smell? From: Mooh Date: 09 Nov 00 - 09:53 PM Rosewood, yeah, and maple too, in a new guitar smells so good it's worth the lust. I too bought a second-hand guitar that smelled so badly of nicotine that I almost didn't keep it. Febreze, the spray descenting stuff for laundry, helped alot as did airing it out for two years. It's an old Harmony Sovereign which I have set up for lap style. Real funky. Cedar classicals smell real sweet too. Better than cheap perfume. Sniff...Mooh. |

Subject: RE: The guitar with the best smell? From: rangeroger Date: 09 Nov 00 - 10:38 PM When I was taking flatpick lessons my instructor always knew when I had been to a camp-out song circle. He would remark on the smell of oak smoke emanating from my guitar. rr |

Subject: RE: The guitar with the best smell? From: JennieG Date: 09 Nov 00 - 11:45 PM Lavender will help get rid of a smoky smell (at least it does in patchwork fabrics); perhaps you could leave some in the case while the guitar is in it? And air it outside as much as possible too. Cheers JennieG |

Subject: RE: The guitar with the best smell? From: Ely Date: 11 Nov 00 - 01:39 AM My mom's 1971 Guild F-30 (I can't remember if it's rosewood or mahogany). My cheapo Alvarez stinks, smells like glue and lacquer. Definitely better than cat pee but still not very romantic. |

Subject: RE: The guitar with the best smell? From: Dave T Date: 11 Nov 00 - 07:26 AM I'd have to say my 1967 Martin OOO-18; it has character all the way from the sound through the dings, nicks, crazed lacquer right through to the old, weathered and only slightly musty(?? not sure that's the right word) smell. The newer D-1R is louder, smells fresh and new...Ok if you like that sort of thing but it lacks personality. - Dave T |
