It appears to have been written by Sylvia Fine, Danny Kaye's wife. I haven't been able to locate any more info.

The song "The Five Pennies" was not a Red Nichols song, but was written for the movie of that name (also the name of his group) by Sylvia Fine, the wife of Danny Kaye who starred in the movie. "Lullabye in Ragtime" used in the movie is also one of hers. She was an excellent songwriter, but also had a great gift to be able to write songs FOR her husband. Danny Kaye had a unique voice and a talent for doubletalking linguistics which she often showcased. If you have never seen the rendition of the guy being drafted and inducted which Kaye did back in WWII, you are missing a real piece of work!
