Subject: Waaaahhhhh! BAH HUMBUG! (Help?) From: hesperis Date: 29 Dec 00 - 11:34 PM This is totally not music-related - well, actually, sort-of. I have been looking for the Quest for Glory Collection for about six months. It is no longer produced by Sierra, and contains games 1-4 and the soundtrack from game 5. I found the games, but not legally, and I would like to get the real games and the manuals. I used to have the soundtrack, but I lent it to my mother and it disappeared. I still have game 5, and it RULEZ! Just in this last week, I was bidding on 3 of the games on eBay, and lost all of the auctions. Then someone on the QFG forum said that he could get the collection for anyone who was interested, and after emailing him to check it out, I just sent him a money order for $33 USD, and he emailed back saying that the store had four copies last week, and sold out just before he got to the store today. I wouldn't even have had that money, except that a friend of mine gave me $50 for Christmas. ($33 US equals *$50* canadian, which is a LOT for me.) The guy says he'll send the money order back as soon as he gets it, but now if I do manage to find the collection, I won't be able to buy it until the money comes back. (And I hope he *does* send it back!) If any mudcatter can find the Quest for Glory Collection, or any part of it, and send it to me, I would be forever grateful.
Please help, and thanks. |

From: catspaw49 Date: 29 Dec 00 - 11:43 PM Good luck on getting your bucks back.........Keep checking on the temperature in hell as it is pretty cold here so you never know. Regarding your quest, so to speak, one of the wonderful things about being me and being my age is that, much as I love you hesp, I have no idea what you're talking about! Spaw |

Subject: RE: Waaaahhhhh! BAH HUMBUG! (Help?) From: Little Hawk Date: 30 Dec 00 - 12:10 AM Hey, Spaw - Quest For Glory is an RPG...a role-playing-game. You play it on a computer. What you do is control a character in a sort of sword-and-sorcery tale set in a mythical place, sort of a medieval or Arabian Nights type of setting. You make decisions for the character, try to keep him or her alive, and solve the riddles, defeat the monsters and other foes, and complete the quest, which usually involves rescuing various people, saving a kingdom from some evil spell, or whatever... Hesperis is addicted to this series of games. Seriously addicted. I am seriously addicted to Caesar III, which is a more historically based game, in which you build a Roman city somewhere in the Roman Empire and try to defend it and make it grow and prosper at the same time. Not easy, by the way. It's very challenging and teaches you a lot. Great graphics too. So...ya got 2 people addicted to 2 different games...and one computer. Tension is rising around here, but I think we will work out a time-sharing arrangement. Either that, or I'll just summon my legions, stage a coup, and imprison the queen in the tower until I have completed my Roman campaign. Hee! Hee! (evil grin) :-D As for the $50, I think it will come back. If not, well, worse things have happened. - LH |

Subject: RE: Waaaahhhhh! BAH HUMBUG! (Help?) From: Matt_R Date: 30 Dec 00 - 12:28 AM I like Quake. Nothing like "surprise" mode, where you can walk up to the monsters and blow them to bloody bits with the grenade launcher, while Creed blams in the background. I also like the car battery-powered lighting weapon, were if you stand in water, you can use it to electrocute and blow even Shamblers into hunks of red meat. Mmm, tastes good, does blood on a knife! --J.R.R. Tolkien |

Subject: RE: Waaaahhhhh! BAH HUMBUG! (Help?) From: DonMeixner Date: 30 Dec 00 - 12:40 AM I thought that RPGs were rocket powered grenades. As far as games go, nothing beats a good game of cribbage or scrabble. Don |

Subject: RE: Waaaahhhhh! BAH HUMBUG! (Help?) From: Little Hawk Date: 30 Dec 00 - 10:42 AM Why is it that young men love to shoot and blow up things? I mean, I used to love it too, but that was before computer games, so I did it with cap guns, firecrackers, dirt wads, toy soldiers, and the help of a vivid imagination. But why is it? One possible connection...I've noticed that after said young men find female companionship, their priorities tend to shift, and the cap guns are retired to the closet. This may not be so true of blow-'em-up computer games, however. I know a man in his fifties who would rather fly simulated fighter planes all day and night long than eat, sleep, make love, or anything. His wife manages to get his attention for maybe a minute or two out of any given day. Any comments? - LH |

Subject: RE: Waaaahhhhh! BAH HUMBUG! (Help?) From: Matt_R Date: 30 Dec 00 - 10:50 AM Well, LH, I'd rather be with my girl than play computer games, but I can't right now, so I'm blowing up monsters pretending it's that rat bastard rrrrrrr |

Subject: RE: Waaaahhhhh! BAH HUMBUG! (Help?) From: hesperis Date: 30 Dec 00 - 11:26 PM I have to say that I did have a lot of good things happen this Christmas - it's not all bad. Hawkster gave me another hamster, and it's really cute. But I really thought that I finally had the QFG Collection, and that was *really* disappointing. Oh, well. I'll just have to make some space on my computer by burning some of those music CDs, so that I can delete all those music files, (650 MB of them,) so that I can install Age of Empires! Heh, heh! |

Subject: RE: Waaaahhhhh! BAH HUMBUG! (Help?) From: Gypsy Date: 01 Jan 01 - 08:19 PM I dunno. Better half is also addicted to Quake, but have had no problems with lack of attention. He might spend an hour or so a day playing with it, then plays with ME. considering how many people zone in front of the Tube for hours on end, i don't think computer games are so bad. At least they are interactive. (one womans opinion) |

Subject: RE: Waaaahhhhh! BAH HUMBUG! (Help?) From: MarkS Date: 01 Jan 01 - 10:08 PM If you want to try a real computer role play game, try to find the original Zork series. All text, no graphics, except in you mind. Sound boring by modern standards, but it is a hoot. MarkS |

Subject: RE: Waaaahhhhh! BAH HUMBUG! (Help?) From: NightWing Date: 02 Jan 01 - 05:09 PM In this context, "RPG" stands for "Role-Playing Game". The best-known example is Dungeons & Dragons. In an RPG, the player creates a "character" and makes the decisions for his/her character through a make-believe world. The so-called "MUD" ("Multi-User Dungeon") was the first interpretation of RPGs to the Internet.

Subject: RE: Waaaahhhhh! BAH HUMBUG! (Help?) From: hesperis Date: 03 Jan 01 - 09:02 PM Actually 999 MB of mp3's. But some of them came with the games... Most of them were from mp3.com. There are a LOT of good flamenco guitar players on mp3.com... Hawkster is finally letting me on the computer after playing Caesar 3 for a few hours. *sigh* I think I am going to have to teach him how to transfer saved games to floppy disk, and take said disk HOME to play the g** d**n game on HIS computer. |

Subject: RE: Waaaahhhhh! BAH HUMBUG! (Help?) From: hesperis Date: 10 Jan 01 - 11:10 PM Thief 2 demo froze my computer repeatedly. So did the demo for Tomb Raider 3. Doesn't seem to really like turning the view ALL the way around, even though both games advertize being able to do that. Didn't see enough of the game play to want to buy either of them. |

Subject: RE: Waaaahhhhh! BAH HUMBUG! (Help?) From: Little Hawk Date: 21 Jan 01 - 06:50 PM More good news! The guy returned the US $33 money order, so he turned out to be honest, and all's well that ends well. Hesperis is now deliriously playing various episodes of Quest For Glory, driving her character's skill points in such things as strength, agility, lock-picking, and whatever to unheard-of levels. Even Superman would feel nervous around this character... As for me, I played Caesar III until I began wondering where my life had gone. I am still out looking for it now. I plead guilty to charges of either complete idiocy or temporary insanity. Hmmm... Which shall it be? - LH |
