Subject: moral dilemma From: GUEST,radegast Date: 18 Jan 01 - 04:54 PM Subject: A Moral Dilemma I have a moral question for you. This is an imaginary situation, but I think it is fun to decide what one would do. The situation: You are in the Midwest, and there is a huge flood in progress. Many homes have been lost, water supplies compromised and infrastructures destroyed. Let's say that you're a photographer out getting still photos for a news service, traveling alone, looking for particularly poignant scenes. You come across George W. Bush who has been swept away by the floodwaters. He is barely hanging on to a tree limb and is about to go under. You can either put down your camera and save him, or take a Pulitzer Prize winning photograph of him as he loses his grip on the limb. So, here's the question and think carefully before you answer the question below: > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Which lens would you use? > > |

Subject: RE: BS: moral dilemma From: Allan C. Date: 18 Jan 01 - 05:24 PM Without knowing the distance, the ASA and type of film, and the amount of available light, it would be difficult to guess but, assuming it is a BW shot and there is some rain and/or fog, I would lean toward using a Nikon 300mm f/2.8D ED-IF AF-S Telephoto Lens with a Straw-yellow filter. But I would just have to set it on auto-release because I'd want to get in the shot as the rescuer. |

Subject: RE: BS: moral dilemma From: catspaw49 Date: 18 Jan 01 - 05:29 PM WHAT ALLAN??? Man you'd be viewed as some sort of reverse Oswald! Lemmee know if you do this and I'll start putting out some conspiracy innuendos. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: moral dilemma From: Allan C. Date: 18 Jan 01 - 06:24 PM Sorry, Spaw. All of us INFP's are rescuers at heart. We can't help it. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: moral dilemma From: Matt_R Date: 18 Jan 01 - 06:38 PM Allan, since it's taken in the fog/rain, you better let your D-76 sit for about 11 or 12 minutes instead of 10. |

Subject: RE: BS: moral dilemma From: Lepus Rex Date: 18 Jan 01 - 06:44 PM I'd get a picture of my foot pressing down on his forehead. Dunno what lens. I'd prolly have one of those disposable cameras. ---Lepus Rex |

Subject: RE: BS: moral dilemma From: Allan C. Date: 18 Jan 01 - 06:51 PM Good point, Matt. But I'd hate to miss the chance for the shot. I think since the film would have just been loaded from where it was stored in the cooler, fogging would probably be kept to a minimum. Good choice on the film, BTW. |

Subject: RE: BS: moral dilemma From: Matt_R Date: 18 Jan 01 - 06:53 PM How long does the automatic time last on the Nikon? I have a Canon AE-1 and it's only about 10 seconds. You'd have to be fast!! |
|
Subject: RE: BS: moral dilemma From: Irish sergeant Date: 18 Jan 01 - 07:13 PM I'd save him. Why? I wouldn't want the surviving Reaganistas to make a martyr of him. And the other reason is, I have no idea what lens to use. Kindest reguards, Neil |

Subject: RE: BS: moral dilemma From: Sorcha Date: 18 Jan 01 - 07:53 PM My last word in this thread: The Shrub is bad, but it's only 4 years, and there are lots worse people that could be running the country. Stop and think for a few minutes about a para military take over by the Aryan Nation.........or a few others I can think of America does do guns, ya know. There are lots worse things that could happen to the country--stop and think what would happen if California really DID fall into the ocean because of a big quake----I am not looking for funnies, here, Wyoming could have beach front propery.......and after the shock wave went all the way around the globe, so could Illinois, not to mention what would happen to the rest of the world. |

Subject: RE: BS: moral dilemma From: Allan C. Date: 18 Jan 01 - 08:12 PM BTW, Matt, the new Nikon Mavica digital has the 35mm focal length equivilant of a 39 - 390 zoom, has built in button adjustments to enhance difficult shots such as this or even white background shots, a macro feature that allows focus as close as 2mm(!) I believe that the time delay is as much as 15 seconds AND it uses a 3 inch CD for storage!!! The CD fits in that little indentation in your cup holder and requires NO special software to read it. It would be an excellent choice for this situation or for nearly any other. I am saving my nickles. This sucker costs around $1,250. And I don't care if it was Atilla the Hun, I'd still have to rescue him. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: moral dilemma From: Matt_R Date: 18 Jan 01 - 08:20 PM Wow that's pretty cool. Usually zoom lenses lose quality the greater the zoom. But a CD?? Aww...what happened to the The Darkroom and the Ole Talking Dektol Blues? |

Subject: RE: BS: moral dilemma From: Allan C. Date: 18 Jan 01 - 08:55 PM You just haven't lived until you mix your own stuff using glacial acetic acid. Ah-h-h the fumes! It brings tears to my eyes to just think about it. Matt, you just MUST write that song! The title is great! And back on topic, sorta... I am not happy about how the election came out. I am not happy about certain aspects of the system. I am less than pleased about the forces that drive those who run our country. I don't approve of the use of nuclear power - even for peaceful purposes. I strongly oppose the everconstant ruining of our environment. The list goes on and on. But because I also see the alternatives that would eliminate things from my life that I am not prepared to do without, I find that I am not brilliant enough to come up with an answer to the question: What workable changes do you propose? So, regardless of any of the above, I would drag our future president out of the torrent if I could because he is a human being and I would do the same for any other human. But, in the scenario above, if I were a professional, I would still try to get some sort of photo. |

Subject: RE: BS: moral dilemma From: Matt_R Date: 18 Jan 01 - 09:07 PM Lol, well Allan, I'm an Image Design major, and right now we're learning about digital manipulation of photographs. So, you want to stand behind President Lincoln? How about at the driving of the Golden Spike? Or on the Olypmic high dive? I can do it! |
|
Subject: RE: BS: moral dilemma From: Allan C. Date: 18 Jan 01 - 09:20 PM Yeah, I've done that as well, Matt. It is a heap of fun. I think I would prefer to appear in one of C. M. Russell's scenes. |

Subject: RE: BS: moral dilemma From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 18 Jan 01 - 09:24 PM I imagine I'd rescue the man, and then maybe make a public apology to the nation.
Actually, as I've said on another thread, I think the best hope you've got is Bush's indolence - and that Lon Chaney character looks like a hard-working bastard, so you don't want him in the job. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: moral dilemma From: Allan C. Date: 18 Jan 01 - 09:32 PM Less than common, Kendall, but not rare. *G* I think you might be surprised to discover that there are many in the folk world who are also INFP's. |

Subject: RE: BS: moral dilemma From: GUEST,Eluned Date: 18 Jan 01 - 09:36 PM I'm basically a kind person, I like the idea of rescuing him AND getting the photo. I've thoroughly enjoyed the humorourous discussion in the light vein that it was meant (and personally don't think it was intended as an opening for a political discussion). When it comes to Politics, especially when it comes to elections already done with, I say treat it like a reptile and don't bother it if it doesn't bother you.... |
|
Subject: RE: BS: moral dilemma From: Troll Date: 18 Jan 01 - 10:52 PM I'd rescue him and to hell with the photo. A human life is more important than some award. And just so you all don't think I would rescue him just because I'm a conservative, if it was Al Gore instead of Bush I'd rescue him too! troll * now if it was my old supervisor...* |

Subject: RE: BS: moral dilemma From: Kim C Date: 19 Jan 01 - 10:03 AM I'd tell my husband to go save him while I took the picture. I have a little Olympus automatic camera and I prefer Fujicolor 800 film. Yeah, okay, it's a little humorous, maybe, but if it were for real, no matter who it was, I'd like to think most of us would at least make an attempt to save a drowning person. I certainly would, without giving it a second thought. |

Subject: RE: BS: moral dilemma From: Midchuck Date: 19 Jan 01 - 10:16 AM Wouldn't it be fairer to wait until the guy screws up before you dump on him? I'm not saying he won't screw up, mind you. Just that fairness precludes calling someone a crook or an incompetent for what you figure he's going to do. He might surprise you. Myself, I figure he'll do very little; and therefore do very little harm. This will put him ahead of most Democratic Presidents. Peter. |

Subject: RE: BS: moral dilemma From: Mrrzy Date: 19 Jan 01 - 10:56 AM It was STILL a very funny joke. In fact, I had to go tell it before I could even answer the question! It may be only 4 years that HE will be in office, but the shock waves won't die out for decaded. It's still the law. Look at how the Reagan/Bush appointees to the Supreme Court, how long ago was that, more than 8 years! And look at the damage they are still doing! Any reporter worth their salt would take the picture and be a good reporter and a lousy human being. But that's their job. Does anyone remember the guy who called the press and said he was going to set himself on fire to protest something or other, and he did, and survived, and then tried to sue the reporters for taking pix instead of trying to put the fire out? He LOST. Now, I could never be a reporter, because (even for GW) I would have to drop the camera and go fetch. But a good reporter would get a great shot, which I would then use as my computer wallpaper... (just kidding!) - a nice zoom shot of his wart/pimple/whatever it is still out of the water, with his mouth and nose already under. |

Subject: RE: BS: moral dilemma From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 19 Jan 01 - 11:14 AM Ever since I learned the Prez is known as Potus, I've thought of him as a sorta cousin to Cletus...I'd use a 200mm lens to capture the puzzled look as he wonders how to hold on and shout "Help" at the same time.
