And here I was getting together a helpful list of high fibre foods to recommend for those folks having problems with constipation.
After Catspaw's comment, I put the list back in my files.

Little Neo, use the list to _provide_ the fibre instead. Plenty of ppl neglect the dietary content of diet books, I don't know why. Eat the book instead, and watch the weight drop off! Hey, I think I may be on to something here...

Grab.

Oh, PS: The comment may be true, but I'm very glad the former takes longer than the latter. My profound sympathies to anyone for whom it's the other way around. ;-)

Sign: ingest terrycloth, have a towel movement. Query: do people across the pond call a facecloth a "flannel"? What are flannel shirts called then?

I dunno, I think all these things are related once they mix in our brains. It's like food-- separete dishes carefully crafted on the plate, the tongue appreciating each... then once they're in the tummy, mixed up goo!!!

Over in e-mail I am having a good giggle with a pal over a sex-advice site ad that I received in my inbox, referring in part to something "whimsical" one might do in bed, but they misMISspelled it WHIMSICLE, and I wanna know, is that like a Dreamsicle, and.... does the Good Humor man have one, and what do they cost, and do they really melt in your mouth but not in your hand...

Wise Nutrition Tip of the Day on Constipation and Fluid Intake

Stools require a certain percentage of water content to pass through the colon easily. There are a few reason why the water content becomes inadequate.
Many of the processed foods we eat have a low percentage of water content compared to fruits and vegetables.
Foods like refined white breads, white rice, processed cookies, pizza, hamburgers, Mr. Subway (except for the few vegetables added)

Refined foods require lots of water for digestion where as if you were to eat a bowl of fruit or a big salad, you would require less water consumption because these foods have a high water content.

Whole grains also contribute to increasing water content of the stools because the fiber attracts water from our system and will retain it in the stools.

I believe health professionals recommend drinking 8 cups of water per day to compensate for our typical western style diet. I usually gage how much water is need by the types of foods consumed. For example, if you eat figs, raisin or any other dried fruits, more water will be needed because these foods have had their water removed from dehydrating and they will require more water to dehydrate in your body. If you eat something salty like olives or lots of soy sauce in a Chinese vegetable dish, the body will require more water for digestion.
If you eat a pita pocket with humus you should drink more water than if you had humus and lots of veggie stick or a big salad.

There is an understanding that water should not be consumed with meals or at least as little as possible during meals. This theory is based on the idea that digestive enzymes will work most effectively if not diluted. I tend to believe this myself. Fluids should be mostly taken between meals. I recommend waiting approximately 10 minutes before and 20 minutes after a meal.

Tomorrow we will discuss whether your stool float or sink

High fiber diets give you floaters and low fiber gives you sinkers, right Bonnie?

The moral here then is to drink lots of water and always inspect your poop.

Look guys, I'll tell you right now, if you have given birth more than 4 times, or you are getting on in years, you may not enjoyable sneezing so much. After the 5th labour or the age of 75 I start recommending Depends Incontinence Adult Diapers to handle the aftermath of a good sneeze.

Yes Catspaw, good indicator. If they float it is a sign of a good healthy diet, if they sink, come see me.

I personally recommend, about 10 minutes before the meal begins, drinking a dryish Riesling; and then, depending on the courses, a 60s Bordeaux (just coming into their own, and in the $1000 dollar range), a 97 Beaujolais (still drinkable), or if you are into heavy meats, a Burgundy (some of the 93s are still available). Afterwards (25 minutes or so will do, certainly), a crowning Monbazillac. I would eschew liqueurs for at least a couple of hours.

yours, Peter T.

mine sink....but I haven't been constipated in YEARS. And I used to have serious problems.

(ummm..maybe 25 years ago, I started to flush, when I noticed this amazing two-toned deposit...4-5 inches of dark brown, then 4-5 inches of light greenish brown...it was so ...what's a word? fascinating...that I took a picture...and somewhere in the "bowels" of my slide archives, I still have it, I think...Just one of those little things that define us...)

(You know...it's too bad NPR has already used the title "All Things Considered" for a radio show...I think it would be a great alternate name for Mudcat!)

Liz, if I go shopping and find myself getting all excited over the wonderful things I see in the store I want to buy.......thats it for me, I'm looking for the nearest bathroom.

Bill D, I wish all my patients could be as descriptive as you are. It would save me a great deal of time and trouble.

Catspaw, please double zip lock bag it before you send it out in the mail. No more than 1/4 pound please, thank you.

Well if you have ever been afflicted with the screaming meanies the choice would be simple. Yea, I'm talking big time diarrhea! As one who has trouble when just walking past a Mexican restaurant I know what I'm talking about. Anyway this actually happened to me a few years back. I had just left the Mt. Flem Boil Sucking Festival and was headed to the National Hemorrhoid Convention when I was hit with severe stomach cramps. We were on Interstate 75 crossing Michigans upper peninsula, with nothing butt forest for miles around. We finally came to an exit in the middle of nowhere. There was a SMALL bush at the end of the exit and I could wait no longer. Jumping out of the truck and doing my diarrhea walk I just made it. The bush was REAL SMALL. I swear the next ten cars got off at that exit while my friend? was standing on the road laughing his a_ _ off.
