Wondering about the rumored tapes that are supposed to circulate...and how to listen to them...

Depends what you are looking for. There are some on the official Bootleg 1-3 put out by Columbia. There are many, many others that you can find in decent 2nd hand CD stores -- in my town (Toronto) there are three CD stores that have bootleg tapes from 1962 all the way to 1995. There must be (by my count) at least 30 of them.

The CD store at Bathurst and Dupont had about 10 the last time I was there (a month ago). The CD store at College and Brunswick had about 15 (they had a whole pile from all periods), also about a month ago. And the CD store(s) at Queen and McCall had a mess of them. Some of these are simply pre-Bootleg album versions of songs on the Bootleg (e.g. the New York sessions of Blood on the Tracks), some are from various concerts in 1962-3, some Basement Tapes, some from Band tours, some from the Never Ending Tour, and so on. I confess to not being that much of a Dylan freak -- I have listened to one or two, from the early 90's which were good, and some which were from concerts which were dreadful (the concerts were dreadful too, so one is ambivalent -- does one want the sound to be better or worse?)

Thread creep. Peter I was at Rick's the other day and he said that you loaned him an 80's or 90's Dylan CD that was mostly acoustic but couldn't remember the title. Said he's enjoying though, which one is it?

There are two of them -- Good As I Been to You, and World Gone Wrong. The first has songs like Canadee-i-o, Froggy Went a Courting (a dull version), Step It Up and Go, Frankie and Albert, Jim Jones; the second has similar - Delia, Stack-o-Lee, and so on. They were the only later ones I ever listened to, but I never really listened to them much, until Rick got me interested in the originals, which I preferred; and now Rick has got my interest piqued in what Dylan does with them! So I have already learned something from our "Secret Project".

Thanks. I almost picked up "Good As I Been to You" in a used store in Toronto the other day. I've heard "Froggy Went A'Courtin" a few times on the now defunct CJRT folk show. I enjoyed it. I should have picked up the CD, I'll get it if it's still there the next time I'm in T.O.

There's stuff from '61 supposedly. I read on a site about an "east orange" tape, a "gleason's" household tape (guthrie would visit this home from the hospital on Sundays)...I'm real curious about those.

Well, I don't know, after Doc Watson's version of "Froggy", Dylan's sounds pretty boring. I mean Doc Watson's is just so superb, and funny. Dylan's has a few more verses, but really, no comparison. yours, Peter T.

I haven't heard Doc's version, but what I've heard of Doc I'm sure it would be superb.
