The "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" soundtrack is all over napster!! cool... Sure, it'll be a fad for lots of people, but some will stick with good music like this!

Maybe people are worried Big Mick might come after us...In this case I'm inclined to think that the overall effect is more likely to be to sell more records of the performers, and the soundtrack as well.

I've got the CD already, and would have bought it even if I'd caught it on Napster or wherever. The same way I'll buy the video when it comes out, even if I've taped it off a TV showing first. Things like this I like to be able to hold in my hand.

Big Mick who?!?!

That's my thinking exactily Mcgrath, where Napster and oither file sharing is concerned... It's been shown that since the advent of Napster, CD sales are up!

I did the same thing the night I fist saw Gladiator... Came home and downloaded a bunch of the tracks and listened to them... 3 days later I went out and bought the CD... Just like I plan to do with Oh Brother...

Actually, the stats about CD sales differ depending on who's doing the calculating. And the college market was down, in spite of the young being the largest aggregate consumers of commercial music.

On the other hand, there are a lot of "littler folks" who are getting good reaction from being on mp3.com, IUMA, and others.

*shameless plug*
Seanna Rowe (new Mudcatter Jande,) has two songs up at mp3.com, and has several people wanting to buy her CD. The CD isn't even totally recorded yet! (And it might be more than one CD, as she has about a hundred songs, and some compositions.)
*end shameless plug*
(It's really gorgeous music, too!)

Actually, hespiris, depending on who you talk to the college sales are also up. What was the quote...? Something akin to there being only two kinds of statistics, lies and damned lies?

One of my friends was heartbroken when Napster finally started looking like it's headed down for good. So, in the meantime, he's downloaded Gnutella... and Aimster... and others that I don't remember the name of. Seems that with most of the non-Napster programs, there's a) no way to track individuals using the service, b) no central server (i.e., the "shut it down now" order is impossible), and c) with some of the others, you can trade software, dvd files AND mp3. As it was explained to me, with the newer file sharing things, if it's digital, it can be traded.

Anyone for another can of worms, industrial sized?

seanM

We computer literate folk out here will just go back to using ftP servers if needs be... we've been using them to trade all manner of stuff long before Napster, Gnutella, and all those other programs came along... They just made it easier for the non-gompie to swap...

I'll tell ya, Big Mick, who? Big Mick who doesn't approve of stealing intellectual property, that's who. You know, I wouldn't mind the difference of opinion if, just once, you highly intelligent folk would quit dancing around with bullshit arguments and admit that you like these programs cause they save you money. But not one of you will ever admit that you do this because you want something for nothing. If you would just admit to that base premise, without all the smoke and mirror bullshit arguments, we might be able to find some common ground on the issues of the big labels ripping us off. We could also debate the difference between a small label like Folk Legacy getting $15.00 to $20.00 for a CD, and BMG doing the same. But for that to happen, you will have to admit why you like it.

Mick who???...........hhhhhhmmmmmppppppphhhhhh.........mumble, mutter, sputter, grumble.............Mick who, indeed..........Big Mick who was mudcatting when your people were still living in caves, dat's Big Mick, Who?..........asshole..........mumble, grumble, sputter........Mick wanders off to his hill talking to himself..........

Oh, and by the way, Elderly can't keep the soundtrack CD's on the shelf. I have been in twice and each time they are sold out within a day of stocking.

BM... you should read the statements on the Napster web site, by artist who support them...

For instance, I could just as easily tape stuff off the radio and distribute it... As a matter of fact, I have done, with some live shows by Garnet Rogers, James Keelaghan and the like... How's that any different? I ask them about this, especially Garnet, and he thought it was pretty cool, an underground, boot-leg scene of folk music... when we parted he was still chuckeling...

As I said above, I don't use napster to get stuff for free... and most Napster users don't either... otherwise record sales would reflect that with a drop in $$... that's not the case at all.. record sales are up...

Which is not to say that I have no problem at all with piracy! Where do you think I get most of my software?!? And ya know how many sleepless nights it's given me? Not a one...

Sainted, Revered, Big Mick:

I have used Napster on a few occasions to download sound files -- maybe half-a-dozen all told, from the whole spectrum -- Dylan to Mussorgsky. And I want you to know the reason I did it was because it saved me money and time, and it was extraordinarily convenenient, and there is no justification. Well, Mussorgsky's dead, so he don't mind...but I am sure Mister Zimmerman is probably pissed at me.

At least that is a start, Amos. This ain't got shite to do with being sainted. A saint I ain't. It has to do with paying those that own it. That is honor. If someone thinks being honorable is the same as being overly pious, to hell with them. I won't bother with Hammond as he has stated that he doesn't care, and loses no sleep over theft(software comment). Not much I can do with that. That is a lack of honor. I just believe that it is wrong to take others property, intellectual or physical, without their permission. And that is what Napster does. Courts say the same thing. The artists (?) that think it is OK have no affect on this. I think it could be a wonderful tool for distributing new music and bypassing the big labels. But I think it could have disastrous effects on struggling labels like Folk Legacy.

Our band went for two years without being paid so we could make our first CD and plowed all the sales money into the second one.
We worked damn hard for those CD's and I, for one, would like to be paid for my efforts.
We paid ASCAP and BMI where appropriate and gave credit where credit was due.
Good on yer Mick, for speaking out.
If anyone wants to buy a copy of The 24th Street Klezmer! Band's CD's -Bagles and Grits or Klezarchy_ PM me and I'll give you the particulars.
But don't put them on Napster 'cause that would piss me off and you wouldn't like me if I got pissed.

troll * sorry 'bout the shameless sales pitch*

Hey Clinton............get a nerve, did we? I hate to tell you, but it ain't us that is buggin you. It is you knowing that you are wrong.

As far as "holier than thou" and keeping opinions to oneself, let us recap the thread. First, you started it and no one responded. Probably because no one gave a shite. Then you came back and McGrath made a joke about Napster because it is controversial. Then you made a smart ass remark about me to which I responded. If you will note, it was tongue in cheek for the most part. It also addressed my disagreement with those who believe it is OK. Then the discussion turned to the pro's and con's to which I responded.

As far as keeping opinions to oneself........this is Mudcat. It is about opinions. Do I need to count how many you have shared? This place is about opinions.........especially where you intitiated it. If the thread is about the recording.............IT IS GREAT!!!!!! With regard to unregulated filesharing for the purposes of stealing the intellectual property of others..............I will be on you every time you or any other acts like it is OK because "it is here to stay" or because "everyone does it" or such other anti-intellectual, immoral, and unethical bullshit argument. As far as being "holier than thou", I probably am, but bite me any fecking way.

Big Mick
