Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Living on th Hallelullia Line From: Bill D Date: 25 Feb 01 - 11:45 AM and, if you go back one step in the WWW address, to http://church-of-the-holy-ghost.freeyellow.com/page5.html , there a very extensive list of Pentacostal hymns!....now, be warned, the did NOT display for me in Netscape..it loaded, but stayed blank. I did 'view source', and everything was there, so I opened it in Internet Explorer and it all worked fine. Some of the Pentacostal hymns are among the most rousing and 'singable' anywhere. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Living on th Hallelullia Line From: GUEST,rosscampbell Date: 25 Feb 01 - 03:32 PM Thanks, everybody; I've been looking for "Hallelujah Side" for ages. My next step is to track down the Stoneman connection. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Living on th Hallelullia Line From: Stewie Date: 25 Feb 01 - 07:04 PM Ross, In his notes to the Rounder album in which Stoneman's 'Hallelujah Side' was reissued, Tony Russell gave no indication of Stoneman's source and neither did Ivan Tribe in his 'The Stonemans'. Russell did note, however, that the same lineup of Stoneman's Dixie Mountaineers also recorded another hymn that was co-authored by Rev Johnson Oatman - 'When the Redeemed Are Gathering In' (which is also in the Pentecostal hymnal linked above by Bill). Russell also commented that the 'unwavering confidence in salvation is typical of this genre' and finds an echo in Stoneman's 'jaunty execution'. Sorry I can't be of more help is your quest for the connection. --Stewie. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Living on th Hallelullia Line From: Stewie Date: 25 Feb 01 - 07:22 PM I forgot to mention that a recording of Stoneman's 'When the Reedeemed Are Gathering In' is available on CD. This is a 1928 recording for Edison on which Stoneman is joined in the choruses by Bolen Frost. It is quite delightful. Ernest V. Stoneman 'Edison Recordings 1928' County CD-3510. The recording that I mentioned above was recorded earlier for Victor with the Dixie Mountaineers. I don't think his 'Hallelujah Side' made it to CD as yet. --Stewie. |
