UNCLE JOHN

Mick Hanly

I had an uncle in the railway.
He had a job, 'cos he was lucky,
But you'd swear he'd had to wear a crown of thorns.
He took a basket off to work.
And though she filled it with the best,
She might have well have tread upon his corns.
He was crotchety at home,
She couldn't tease him, couldn't please him,
so she chose to let her sleeping boy alone

He went drinking on a Friday.
When he was full he started cursing
every lying politician in the land.
"They had the country on it's knees;
For a half a crown they'd sell it,
and yet they had the nerve to shake your hand."
And the Church just got his goat.
With all her teaching and her preaching,
so one day he turned around, and he took the boat

CHORUS
Uncle John.
You're a long time gone, but she saw you as a baby,
never could believe that you had grow..o..o..o..o..own.
Forever more.
She sat and prayed that your shadow
would darken once again the very door.

He found a flat somewhere in London.
I never saw the place myself,
but I've a picture of a cold and lonely scene.
And every penny that he earned
was either gambled, or drank,
while they rattled out 'The Wearin' of the Green'
Always drinking to forget.
Far too proud to say "I miss you"
And living out a life of sad regret.

Uncle John. Uncle John

He came home from work one evening.
Filled the kettle and ran the bath
to get cleaned up for a night out with the boys.
And when his body hit the floor,
they just looked at one another,
Paddy's home, and drunk again, and making noise.
But when the water overflowed,
they called his sister up in Harlow,
said "You'd better come down and fetch him.
There's someone movin' in from down the road".

CHORUS

I hope this is the song you want.
It's a cracker of a song, and not the easiest one to pull off.
Good luck with it.

B.

Of course...it should be:

"..so she chose to leave her sleeping boy alone".

and

"Fixed the kettle and ran the bath
to get cleaned up...."

I'm gonna see my old Uncle John
He's a lot more to me than just my grandfather's son
The biggest catfish ever in the Osage River
Was caught and delivered by my Old Uncle John
Oooh, wee! We're gonna sit and drink a few before I move along

What I remember from a song written by Lawrence Hammond in the 1970's
