Early 90s CD (I believe from Shannachie) had a somewhat romanticized version of "Leave Her Johnny". Remember melody but have lost track of lyrics (Senior Moment) Help

(Psssst, Greyeyes: when I was first a guest here, I couldn't figure out what was meant by "DT." Malcolm Douglas pointed out somewhat as below...)

Guest, the blue box up at the right of this thread is the connection to the DigiTrad, where you'll find lyrics. Click on the L and scroll down to Leave Her Johnny.

I think Makem and Clancy did a version of the second one.

Got it here somewhere. People keep putting things away around here; it's very frustrating...Will look in the usual drawers, closets and refrigerators.

Sarah

I believe their version is also Gordon Bok's version.

Usually I'd recommend the "Digitrad and Forum Search" on the main Forum page, which searches the bodies of discussion threads and song files in the Digital Tradition database as well as their titles, and so usually gets more comprehensive results, but some people prefer the alphabetical lists.  In any case, the main server ("Shorty") appears to be down at the moment.  It's possible to search, but since the default address you get points at the www. URL, you can't get through.  In fact, if you change the URL from www.mudcat.org to (for example) dharma.mudcat.org you can get through, but that's a bit complicated.  Anyway, I've had a look at the two texts in the database and one posted in the Forum, and none is precisely that recorded by Makem and Clancy.  The text they used may be seen at makem.com, here:  Leave Her, Johnny

Malcolm
LEAVE HER JOHNNY

Oh, I thought I heard the old man say
Leave her, Johnny, leave her
It's a long, hard pull to the next pay day
And it's time for us to leave her

Chorus:
Leave her, Johnny, leave her
Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her
Oh, the voyage is done and the winds don't blow
And it's time for us to leave her

Oh, pull you lubbers or you'll get no pay
Oh, pull you lubbers and then be lay

Oh the skipper was bad, but the mate was worse
He'd blow you down with a spite and a curse

And I thought I heard the old man say
It's a long, hard pull to the next pay day

Stan Rogers latest posthumus release, "From Coffeehouse to Concert Hall" has Stan leading a rousing live sing-along of this song. Very nice.
