ALL PRAISE TO SAINT PATRICK
For midi sound click here

All praise to Saint Patrick, who brought to our mountains
The gift of God's faith, the sweet light of His love.
All praise to the Shepherd who showed us the fountains
That rise in the Heart of the Saviour above.
For hundreds of years,
In smiles and in tears,
Our Saint hath been with us, our shield and our stay;
All else may have gone,
Saint Patrick alone.
He hath been to us light, when earth's lights were all set,
For the glories of faith they can never decay,
And the best of our glories is bright with us yet,
in the faith and the feast of Saint Patrick's day.

There is not a Saint in the bright courts of heaven,
More faithful than he to the land of his choice;
Oh well may the nation to whom he was given,
In the feast of their Sire and apostle rejoice.
In Glory above
True to his love,
He keeps the false faith from his children away.
The dark false faith
Far worse than death.
Oh he drives it far off from the green sunny shore,
Like the reptiles that fled from his curse in dismay,
And Erin when error's proud triumph is o'er,
Will still be found keeping Saint Patrick's day.

Then what shall we do for the heaven sent father?
What shall the proof of our loyalty be?
By all that is dear to our hearts we would rather
Be martyred sweet Saint, than bring shame upon thee.
But oh, he will take
The promise we make,
So to live that our lives by God's help, may display
The light that he bore
To Erin's shore.
Oh Yes Father of Ireland! no child wilt thou own
Whose life is not lighted by grace on its way;
For they are true Irish, ah yes, they alone,
Whose hearts are all true on Saint Patrick's day.-Traditional

The link to music which appears above is no good any longer, so I searched and found a version of this which was printed in 1880 at the Hymnary site.

all praise page

I made a MIDI of this, which I will send to Joe for posting here.

I recognize this tune, which is an Irish dance that I have played while rambling through some book, probably O'Neill's music of Ireland. Does anybody recognize it?

I don't think it's really singable. It goes too high. It's been shoved down to E-flat, but the highest note is still F. We would never even TRY to sing this in my church. I'm going to transpose it to C.

I imagine the original dance was AABB, but the lyrics require it to be AABA. (or something like that) The 1880 music didn't sound right when it went back to the he final A section, so I tinkered with it. I'm still not sure it's quite right.

I hope somebody plays this on St Patrick's Day. There are only 45 practicing days left!

Leeneia titled the MIDI "All Hail to St. Patrick," although most sources I could find call it "All Praise to St. Patrick." This video from the Catholic cathedral in Savannah calls it "All Hail." Anybody know anything about this? "All Hail"/"All Praise" was written by the prolific Father Faber, who "seceded to the Church of Rome" from Anglicanism in 1846.

The song should not be confused with Hail Glorious St. Patrick

Here's the MIDI. It's a very catchy tune.

thanks for posting, Joe. That was simply a mistake in the title. It should be "all praise," not "all hail."

Now that you have a not way of working with MIDI's, do titles still need to be written without spaces?
    Hi, Leeneia - please continue to make MIDI titles without spaces. It makes links to the MIDI files more concise and more reliable.
