Subject: Where have all the people gone? From: Coralena Date: 27 Oct 97 - 11:23 AM It seems like folks are leaving the party. Or is it just me? Have things slowed down here at Mudcat? |

Subject: RE: Where have all the people gone? From: Catfeet Date: 27 Oct 97 - 12:12 PM No, it's not you. I, for example, have not been able to get onto the Mudcat for literally weeks without a wait of literally 2 or 3 hours for it to load. I have only been desperate/patient enough once. I doubt I am the only one with this little problem. Hopefully the problem will resolve itself in a few more weeks. Today I was able to get on with no problem. Hang in there. Catfeet |

Subject: RE: Where have all the people gone? From: rechal Date: 27 Oct 97 - 12:35 PM I've had similar problems the last few weeks. I've also been insanely busy at work, which has gotten in the way of mudcatting. |

Subject: RE: Where have all the people gone? From: Whippoorwill Date: 27 Oct 97 - 01:22 PM And I thought all the time it was my server. I have the same trouble at several sites - the system just seems to stall out and do nothing. Usually if I click on the "Reload" button it will jar things loose and go ahead and load, but on this board that creates double postings if you have written anything to the forum. (See "Oops from Max" below.) |

Subject: RE: Where have all the people gone? From: Joe Offer Date: 27 Oct 97 - 03:58 PM Yeah, it's a shame isn't it? The sluggishness seems to have put a damper on things here. Every once in a while, Mudcat seems to speed up for a few minutes, but then it's back to taking forever to load a page. All that waiting just isn't fun. Since I work at home, I can work while Mudcat is loading - and I've been getting a lot of work done lately. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Where have all the people gone? From: Jack mostly folk Date: 27 Oct 97 - 04:35 PM Being the new guy on the block, I hope it's not vacating members as I'm looking forward to finding answers to many questions and offering answers when the occassion arises. Slow can often mean more mudcatters than the system can handle. Yes it has been slow and on some attempts seems to lock up and leave you stranded out there in cyberspace. Where have all the people gone caught my attention as I'm looking for an old folkie and will post that question. Thanks for the reminder ..... Jack mostly folk.... |

Subject: RE: Where have all the people gone? From: Peter T. Date: 27 Oct 97 - 05:05 PM "Gone to flowers every one..." I have found that one way of getting through more rapidly is, when everything stops, to re-load. The system seems to get stuck from time to time, either in stage one (the main threads), or as it is downloading the replies. I have never had to do this more than two or three times. I assume I am waking up the hamster on the wheel the first time around. Anyway, some of us are still here: it is still the best place around. If you go to a Sufi teacher and ask for instruction, he will often tell you to go away for five years, just to see if you are serious. Even with delays, the company is grand. Perhaps one problem is that we are not thinking up controversial enough topics at the moment: whenever we do come up with a juicy one, all hell seems to break loose. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Yours, Peter |

Subject: RE: Where have all the people gone? From: Bill in Alabama Date: 27 Oct 97 - 05:23 PM I hate to say this, but although I have noticed a definite slowdown in getting on the site, I seldom have to wait for more than a minute or so. I, too, have noticed the attrition, but I feel certain that the problem will be solved, and that we'll all be back together again..... |

Subject: RE: Where have all the people gone? From: Bill in Alabama Date: 27 Oct 97 - 05:25 PM Some of us are still here. I, too, have noticed the slowdown, but not to the extent that some of you have experienced. Submitting messages is the slowest thing I get, and then it's seldom longer than a few minutes. |

Subject: RE: Where have all the people gone? From: Bill D Date: 27 Oct 97 - 06:13 PM my friends....try this...(I have a 'model' in my head of why it helps, but it is probably not even close...) when you get to the first page and you try to load the forum threads, and it seems to 'hang' with 4 or 9 or something kbs read, hit 'back' and return to the first page....then 'forward' again...NOT reload! It may not be instant load, but it seems to 'back up and take another run at it'....and gets thru faster than if you just let it set & wait...it may be that whatever you get the first time is somehow 'cached' and the 'forward' click is treated as a new request, with part of your request already done...I have seen this work on graphics many times, and it seems to help here also...the same process applies to opening a particular thread...especially a 20-30 message long thread.... Why not reload? I 'think' that it treats the reload request as 'start over from the beginning'...which negates what you achieved the first time...reload has it's uses, but here it just seems to slow me down... ...I hope this helps..(and that I haven't suggested something that put even MORE stress on the system..if so I'm sure we will find out...) |

Subject: RE: Where have all the people gone? From: Bill D Date: 27 Oct 97 - 06:21 PM oh!! By the way...do NOT do the above after posting...unless you ERASE what you posted before hitting forward!! This is a source of double posts!!Every time you go back and forward, it reads your post & assumes you want to say it again!!Same goes for 'reload'! |

Subject: RE: Where have all the people gone? From: Angus McSweeney Date: 27 Oct 97 - 07:39 PM It sounds like our community is still out there. I, also, have been busier than I wish to be and have missed out on the conversation. I agree with Peter, however, that a good audience participation activity is called for. I haven't noticed a good provocative debate the few times since summer (hazy, lazy days of...)when I've had the time to check in and the fantasy folk circles lost their freshness. But I'm sure someone can get the ball rolling in some creative way (Peter?). Just make sure that you title the piece so we know to go there. Is any of this clear? |

Subject: RE: Where have all the people gone? From: Catfeet Date: 27 Oct 97 - 08:29 PM My problem with getting onto the mudcat seems not to be in the threads, but in simply getting to even the main page. I sometimes get only the banner, (y'know, the thing that says mudcat cafe,) and sometimes not even that, but only the contacting mudcat.org message on the bottom of the screen. After half an hour or more of waiting, I usually become too impatient and decide to end contact. This seems to have ended today, as I was able to log on twice, and it is only now slow in loading threads. This in the peak hour of 8PM EST. I have faith it will work out. Catfeet |

Subject: RE: Where have all the people gone? From: Frank in the swamps Date: 27 Oct 97 - 09:07 PM I work godforsaken hours and usually only get on the web at evenmoregodforsaken hours. I've often got what catfeet described. Generally I see a decline at sunup, So I kinda thunk it was too may folks onto a good thing, but I dunno. I know the controversial threads tend to get some action going, I haven't heard from Elsie since "What is a Folk Song", and the fantasy folk circles were a hit. Maybe we oughta invent a folkies game of scrabble, or, complete the following verse.... I just got here from Tennessee and I caint allow, No redneck rebel roustabout with me to make a row, And I'm......... Frank I.T.S.

Subject: RE: Where have all the people gone? From: John in Brisbane Date: 27 Oct 97 - 09:53 PM Hi, I log on (when I can) about Midnight server time, and yes it is slow even into the wee small hours. Maybe I'm kidding myself, but I have saved Mudcat in Favourites/Bookmark with a default search duration of 3 days. I don't know what this is if you discovered the site for the first time. Regards John |

Subject: RE: Where have all the people gone? From: RS Date: 28 Oct 97 - 12:03 AM Using Netscape Navigator 3.0 Gold, I click on "File - New Web Browser" (in the upper left hand corner, a drop-down menu item) four or five times in rapid succession, to open several parallel versions of the web browser. Each copy then shows up as a separate button on my toolbar, and can be set to a different URL / page. For example, I leave one browser set to the list of threads, so I can look through them; I use two or three browsers for threads I am loading & reading; and sometimes leave one browser set to the chatroom. This way as one thread is loading, I can be reading another, and I can click back & forth between versions, which can really speed things up. |

Subject: RE: Where have all the people gone? From: Bert Date: 28 Oct 97 - 08:54 AM For the past couple of weeks it has slowed down so much that it is unusable most of the time. Several times I have tried to submit a message and it has timed out on me so many times that I have given up. I have a sneaky supicion that Bell Atlantic may be at the root of the problem. Bert |

Subject: RE: Where have all the people gone? From: Peter T. Date: 28 Oct 97 - 10:56 AM Looks as if we've found one subject....Yours, Peter P.S. I have found in Netscape that what you want to do is not officially reload, but reenter (or press return) the listing twice in sequence. The first time gives you a "transfer interrupted" (this keeps you from getting pregnant), and the second one kickstarts the process. I had a car like that once... But G knows what we are doing to Max's baby. |

Subject: RE: Where have all the people gone? From: Sheye Date: 28 Oct 97 - 05:49 PM Same problems...this is the first time in weeks I've managed to open a thread more than a few entries long; being that I'm doing this from work, I have limited time (coffee breaks) to check things out. I usually can't get past the first page. Oh well, I'll drop by when I can... As Always, Sheye |

Subject: RE: Where have all the people gone? From: Whippoorwill Date: 29 Oct 97 - 09:38 AM I had no trouble getting on this morning - for the first time in weeks. More surprising, I'm using the old pokealong IE, which normally takes about three times as long as Netscape to do anything. I'm beginning to think part of my problem is my browser. I recently downloaded Netscape Gold 3.3 evaluation version, and have had problems loading at a number of sites. Think I'll reload 3.0 and see what happens.

Subject: RE: Where have all the people gone? From: judy Date: 30 Oct 97 - 01:43 AM Like everyone else, have found it slow going. I've taken to "select all", "copy" and "paste" out to a word processor, saving the ones I get when the getting's good and reading them off line (not to mention composing a reply and doing research). Like someone mentioned in another thread sometimes the entire web is running slow: used to get things downloading at 1-3 K (or is it M?) per second and have had things loading as slow as 43 lately. I also do what RS does Ah, well we all has our ups and our downs judy |
