Here's the Old Thread

Andy Rooney came up with a scary thought. If anything happens to Chaney, W could appoint Bush Sr as VP. And then resign in his favor?

John

Maybe Jeb? When W. was nominated, didn't Barbara cry, "Oh, no! Not the dummy! It was supposed to be JEB!"

There's lots more but this was released today.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A ballot design that confused voters into chosing two candidates cost Democrat Al Gore (news - web sites) 6,607 votes in Palm Beach County, The Palm Beach Post reported in its Sunday editions.

The newspaper counted more than 19,000 overvotes, or ballots on which more than one vote was recorded for a presidential candidate. It concluded the net gain of votes for Gore would have been 10 times more than he needed to erase Republican George W. Bush's slim margin of 537 votes in the state.

Many voters had complained that the butterfly ballot was confusing because candidates' names appeared on both sides of the punchcard with holes in the middle. They expected the holes to select Bush and Gore to be the first two choices as required by Florida statutes, but instead found Buchanan, on a facing page, located between them.

Time flys- let's hope it flies with no lasting damage this time.

Ha, another Mudcatter asked me the other day who we'd get for VP if Cheney checks out. I said I didn't know, but if Resident Shrub got his way it would be his daddy, brother or mother!

Now, with what Ebbie has posted, there should be a way to kick him and his whole entourage out and start over with this term. It is such a mess I cannot believe people are just going to let it slide by...apathy or disenchantment rules, I guess. How disgusting.

kat, I keep realizing that Gore's concession was Bush's permission. If I felt that we as a people could overturn the decision, I'd take to the streets or whatever else it would take.

To coin a phrase: Power corrupts. Few people give it up willingly- including those around the powerful one.

I've just finished a book on Alzheimer's Disease by Charles P. Pierce who has done a great deal of research on the disease- his father and three uncles of his all died of it.

Pierce says ..."my wife and I watched the first debate between Walter Mondale and President Ronald Reagan. Reagan was a mess, flustered and obviously confused. My wife and I exchanged horrified glances... A few miles away (a researcher) Dennis Selkoe was also watching the debate. Selkoe had been working with Alzheimer's for nearly 25 years...as a researcher and a clinician. Selkoe watched Reagan stumble through his answers. He watched (him) vainly grope for the familiar phrases that would get him back on track. He believed he was watching more than an elderly politician who'd been over-briefed, which was how Reagan's handlers would come to spin the debacle. He believed he was watching what he saw in (his) clinic every Friday. He believed that he was looking at someone fading into Alzheimer's disease. So did (my wife). So did I.

"I will believe this until I die- for at least four yeas, the United States of America was governed by a symptomatic Alzheimer's patient. I believe that the people near him knew it and I believe that they covered for him in a hundred ways, large and small.

"I know how easy it is to do that. I did it for my father and I have to live with the fact that I did not move until it was too late. I believe that there are political functionaries who did not move, either, and I do not envy them their dark miracle or their consciences."

There is no way, imo, that the current people at the reins of our government are going to give it up. Idealism is hard to maintain in the face of the bald cynicism powerful people routinely utilize.

You have to consider also that an American president is in many ways a front man, even a figurehead, for a very entrenched power structure...and what difference does it really make to that power structure whether or not he has Alzheimer's, as long as they can maintain appearances?

I suspect that the powers that be in the USA prefer an ineffectual president who can easily be controlled to one who makes his own mind up and goes his own way.

Ultimately, that power structure does not care too much whether it's the Democrats or the Republicans who run the government. The governing style changes a bit, but the power behind the throne remains unseen and very much in control regardless.

And the people remain divided, confused, and helpless to alter the status quo. Their energy is wasted in fighting partisan battles which never end.

Poverty, unemployment and homelessness should simply not be acceptable. Lack of free medical care should not be acceptable. Not in a sane, decent, and responsible society. Not given the brilliance and the resources at our disposal. A family that lets one of its children starve while two or three others eat like pigs, is a family that has failed its responsibilities. The same goes for a society. A society is a family.

Much the same thing happens in Canada, by the way, on a more moderate and somewhat friendlier scale, but things are slowly getting worse...and the banks are getting richer...and charging more fees every year.

As to the election results, short of someone rolling over and announcing that they singlehandedly falsified half a million votes for Bush in Florida and then presenting signed affidavits to that effect from Mother Theresa, the Pope, and Jesus Christ himself, there's never going to be any resolution on the election. Both sides can (and probably will) continue to claim alternating vindication until sometime well into the 28th century.

Yes, the 'latest' article said that they'd found that Gore won. Earlier, another article said Bush won. Somewhere in all this is still the fact that we're still talking about numbers that give one side or the other an edge well within 1%-2% of the total vote - a number that's still within the 3%-4% margin of error somehow considered 'acceptable'.

As to Cheney keeling over mid-term... I doubt it would happen, and I doubt it would really affect the 'presidency' that much. While I'm sure that Cheney has a direct effect on Bush Boy's decisions, he's surrounded himself with enough industry and right wing cronies who will surely keep him on the straight path of corporate joy. All replacing Cheney would do would be to put another bought politician in the ranks. Heck, replace him with Gore. Nothing whatsoever would change, and then ol'Shrubbie would actually be able to claim a real attempt at "bipartisanship".

To heck with all this. Next election, I'm starting a write in campaign for the homeless guy living in the shrubs in front of the polling place. Hey, if he wins, it means one less homeless and unemployed person...

Well, not till the 28th century, Sean. The USA ain't gonna last anywhere near that long. But for a good long while anyway, that's for sure.

A half-decent social order wouldn't have homeless people, so I like your idea about the write-in. Sounds like a step in the right direction to me.

From another 'Catter, this Texas tall tale:

An elderly Texan went to his doctor. They discussed the recent change in administrations and the elderly man referred to GW Bush as a "post turtle." His doctor, never having heard the term, asked what it meant.

The patient said that sometimes when driving down the road he had noticed that, for sport, someone would place a turtle atop a fence post, and G.W. seemed a lot like that: You knew he didn't get there by himself; you knew that he didn't belong there; you knew he couldn't do anything useful while he was there; and the only thing you wanted to do was to help the poor bastard down.

Quote without comment.

ANOTHER FLORIDA RECOUNT – THIS ONE FROM PALM BEACH POST

Democrats will be bragging today about another recount of the Palm Beach County votes – this one by the Palm Beach Post.

The Post is reporting that Gore would have won if all of the "undervotes" in Palm Beach County had been counted.

Let's dissect this statement a bit.

Undervotes? What are undervotes? They are the hanging chads, dimples, pinpricks, bulging chads, etc. In other words, they are illegal votes. They are votes that don't count according to all previous Florida regulations and court decisions.

The Post is also counting ALL multiple votes for Gore here. If both Bush and Gore are punched – Gore gets the vote. The Post claims this is because of the "confusion" over the butterfly ballot.

So – bottom line. Gore wins --- but ONLY IF the rules are changed AFTER the votes are cast.

Wouldn't THAT be a nifty way to run an election.

Troll, I believe you are quoting a different thing. The West Palm Beach article was about overvoting, not undervoting. These are ballots that were punched twice, either for Bush in #1 spot and Buchanan #2 spot or Buchanan #2 spot and Gore #3 spot. Bush gained some but Gore gained a lot more.

And you've got it wrong about our bragging. Personally I just feel sad. About the whole thing. We have a precedent now that doesn't bode well for the future of our country.

Hey, gang, they STILL haven't completed ANY of the unofficial counts of the under/over/contested Florida votes. This is all non-news! Instead of getting caught up in the bogus media frenzy, why not wait until they're DONE and have a fact or two?

Any sympathy I might have had for the democrats evaporated after they had thrown out the absentee military ballots on a technicality, and then tried claiming the spoiled ballots were really for them. Guess technicalities are ok in this case.
On the practical side, after almost 2 months in office I really have not found anything to get exercised over coming from the Oval Office, and have to wonder just how influential the presidency really is.
But hey, at least we are going to have at least 4 years of lively discussion here!

Boy, Mark, that would really piss me off, too!!
Only difficulty is that the Dems. they didn't do either thing. Unless you consider election laws on the books to be a "technicality". Some 'law and order' types apparently do.

LOS ANGELES, March 12 —
Maybe it should not come as a surprise, but there is talk among the state's leading Republicans about persuading Arnold Schwarzenegger to run for governor next year, the thought being that perhaps the brawny Terminator is just the hero to stop the party's long slide toward political irrelevance.....
