Subject: Rock n'roller - died month after Presley
From: Julie B

... :-) This probably isn't strictly ethical, but a friend is doing a quiz and asked me if I know "who was the rock & roller who died a month after Elvis Presley". Any suggestions?

Thanks, Julie

Well Julie, I've been searching but i can't find anything yet. My first thought was that it was the Lynrd Skynrd plane crash, but that was 2 months after, in October. I DID find several classical folks and the great Maria Callas died in September of '77. I'll keep looking.

Trick question...Elvis isn't dead.

Yeah, I thought it might be Skynrd too -- Ronnie van Zandt was the lead singer who dies in that plane crash, and I think there might have been another band member who dies also (as well as other deaths and injuries). Not a Skynrd fan myself, but I recall that it was shortly after Elvis... left the building.

Yeah WS.....It was Ronnie Van Zandt and the others were Steve and Cassie Gaines.

Julie, I wonder if your friend has the dates wrong???

Maria Callas died not long after Marc Bolan, who died in the September.

I already noted that Liz, but I don't think Maria was a big rocker.

I'm with LTS. I'm pretty sure that Elvis died in August of '77, so If Marc Bolan died in September of that year I would think that would be the answer.

I was never a big fan of Elvis, having been born in '59 I was too young to be around in his glory days. I was mad at him for dying a couple of days before Groucho Marx, one of my favourite people ever. I felt that Groucho didn't get his proper due with all the fuss about Elvis.

To get it right.....Elvis died on August 16, 1977 and the plane crash that killed Van Zandt and the Gaines' was on October 20, 1977. Maria Callas died on September 16, 1977.

And I agree about Grouch Steve.....one of my absolute favorites........

Jon got it, but I found Ethel Waters died on Sep 1 77. I also discovered that Jan Michael Vincent is classified as, not alive, but "breathing." The Dead People Server.

Was T Rex all that big? I'm not being funny, I'm serious. I'm more of an oldies kind of rocker and I had heard of them but didn't recall anything at all about them and couldn't name one song I ever heard. Tom Petty on the other hand.........

You must have it right Jon since the dates match. I should have been more careful when I searched I guess. Here's one of the places I found him at and by-passed. CLICK........Auto accident? Hit a tree? What did this guy write that made it really big? Just curious. Several "dead rocker" sites never mentioned him, although he is at a few others.

Well I didn't get it Jeri - I hadn't a clue. I just thought it was worth checking when he died as Liz had mentioned the name.

Although, I could noot remember the dates, Marc Bolan's death was the one I remember most of the people mentioned here as T Rex were part of my childhood.

Jeri....I ran across that site and got a kick out of it, bookmarked it for future reference too. The one "dead rocker thing" that got the most hits seems to be dead also!!!

Looks like we were posting at the same time spaw. I'm not sure what T Rex did in the rest of the world but they were big in the UK.

OK so I got the dates muddled, hey, I was only 13 2 days before Marc died.

For those confused, he was the original Glam Rocker, started the silver costume and platform boot phase, not one of our best fashion periods, but hey, it was the 70's, we had to do something after the Beatles....

T Rex were pretty big in the UK, still have a huge following, and were sort of funky rock type stuff with some way out weird lyrics.

"Ride A White Swan", "Get It On", "Telegram Sam": yeah, Marc Bolan was big in the UK. He was the original Glam Rocker as LTS says, but unlike most of the others, he was really talented. In the awful period in British pop after the Beatles split and everything seemed to lose direction and inspiration, he provided a glimmer of originality and musicianship.

Marc Bolan was huge in about 1972 and 1973 then fizzled out. His band, T. Rex, produced an interesting sound that competed with the likes of Status Quo and Slade (other UK bands that never made it big in the US but have been covered by US bands of another generation).
1977 was a bad year: first Elvis, then Bing Crosby ... then Johnny Lydon arrived to change it all ...
A year later, the folk rock world lost Sandy Denny of Fairport Convention.
Cheers,
Brian

...great! My friend reckons that, yes, the answer must indeed be Marc Bolan.

Thanks everyone,
