Subject: RE: Music/Lyrics Pre 1500 From: Orac Date: 26 Apr 01 - 10:34 AM It has been suggested that the song "The three ravens" could be as early as 1450 although the earliest copy of it in print is 1611. The problem with very early songs is that with rare exceptions the music did not survive even if the words did. A lot tell stories, so it is not known whether they were actually sung or spoken with some instrumental accompaniment. |

Subject: RE: Music/Lyrics Pre 1500 From: IanC Date: 26 Apr 01 - 10:39 AM "Cuckoo Song" was recorded (lyrics with music) in the 13th century. "The Cutty Wren" was apparently sung during The Peasants' Revolt in England (1381). Do you want just folk songs?
Cheers! |

Subject: RE: Music/Lyrics Pre 1500 From: GUEST,Mr Red @ Library Date: 26 Apr 01 - 11:33 AM Summer is icumen in isn't that reputed to be 13xx or am I confusing it with another May song? The Abbots Bromley Horn dance goes back before 1350 - Indeed their horns are reindeer (extinct in UK c600AD) and carbon date to 1065 +/- 50 years. There may be tunes they use. |

Subject: RE: Music/Lyrics Pre 1500 From: GUEST Date: 26 Apr 01 - 11:36 AM The Abbot's Bromley horn dance is not documented prior to the 17th century. The choreography is consistent with a 17th century date. The music that accompanies the dance varies from time to time. The antlers are old, but nothing about the age of the dance can be deduced from the age of the antlers. |

Subject: RE: Music/Lyrics Pre 1500 From: M.Ted Date: 26 Apr 01 - 01:50 PM I a curious about whether it has to be folk music (as opposed to, say, Provencal Troubadour Ballads) and what the reason for your particular cutoff date is--also the question about whether they have to be in English or not-- |

Subject: RE: Music/Lyrics Pre 1500 From: Mr Red Date: 30 Apr 01 - 05:45 PM Abbots Bromley "dancing with horns" was referred to in 13xx a in a Lichfield cathedral document. The Horn dancers believed it to refer to their dance and published as such in a 50's brochure. It is known to have been banned during the war - civil war. Who knows what survives 935 years in our world - we rear Saxon pigs, cows & sheep and eat Norman pork, beef, & mutton. If you have a right to kill the Kings deer and can't read or write how do you establish that right year on year? They still beat the bounds in Lichfield at the Lichfield Bower every year. Probably the same kind of reason. |
