G'day
bbc was after Aussie songs about animals:
Yet another of the promised Aussie fauna songs. This is a children's song collected, as I have already said back in your original thread, from 'Gem' Buck, who heard it in the 1930's from an old shearer, now hired to look after her father's orchard. (After a working lifetime stooped over, shearing uncooperative sheep, a stint of reaching upwards to prune fruit trees would be like a spell in Heaven!) The Possum Song Collected by Amanda & John Daly, Jamberoo, March 1996 Verses 2 and 4 collected by Rob Willis, Gerringong, September 1996 Source: Gem Buck of Gerringong One day as I was walking, I looked up in a tree, And there I saw a possum, a-looking down at me. I said unto this possum; "Whatever do you see, A-sitting like a fool in the old gum tree?" Chorus: Fattle - dittle - di - do, fattle - dittle - dee; Fattle - dittle - dattle - dittle - di - do - dee! I see a lot up here, that folk like you don't see, Like who goes by, and what might be our tea. My wife is always happy, the children have no fear. It is a privilege to be, a possum in a tree. Chorus: Fattle - dittle - di - do, ... Says I unto the possum, "Introduce your wife to me". "Och, she's washing of the kids in the bottom of the tree; But when she's got 'em clean and tidy do you see, We'll have a little game round the old gum tree." Chorus: Fattle - dittle - di - do, ... So I waited and out came Mum, with her little possums three And we all danced a jig, round the old gum tree, And if you don't believe me, one night come out and see, And you can dance a jig with us, around the old gum tree. Chorus: Fattle - dittle - di - do, ...
