Frankly I wouldn't bother. This is the most boring song in the world. People will disembowel themselves before you get to the bit about the goslings.

Go Tell Aunt Rhody was my the first tune my daughter Olympia really WANTED to master on piano. She loves to pound it out - I'll agree it's pretty lame, but a nine year old can bring some life to it!

Don't want to start Mudcat-slinging, but I can't share the point of view of those who say "This particular song is boring/stupid/dull/a waste in my opinion, so none of the other 3,999,999,999 people in the world have a right to care about it." Dr. Soul, I think, provided a perfect example. "Sorry, Olympia, you can't play this song any more because someone in a galaxy far away is bored by it." Doesn't fly. I do trad, and was until very recently likely to feel superior to people whose musical world consists of themes from fifties TV westerns. If Grampa Stutz gets a kick out of listening to "Maverick is a legend of the West," what's wrong with that? I too had a colleague whose one musical accomplishment was learning "Go Tell Aunt Rhode" on the autoharp. Wow, two birds with one stone, a boring song on a dumb instrument. If it made her happy, what's the matter with it?? I truly don't get it.

Well, *I* like it because my mother sang it, and I've sung it ever since.

However, some years ago I read a reminiscence (sorry I can't remember whose) of someone who had learned that song, oh, around 1900 and could remember what it felt like to sing it when she was little. For her, the crying goslings were a way of dealing, at a distance, with a possibility that even children were aware of in an era when deaths of young & middle-aged people were far more common than they are now: when most people, even in the respectable classes of a rich country, probably knew some orphans.

If you're bored with a song that has lasted for a long time, you may just have been left out of a chain of sentimentalities, but you may also be missing something.
