Subject: Yankee Clipper From: southmoon Date: 26 May 01 - 08:30 PM What's-his-name (maybe Charlie O'Hegerty) wrote and used to sing a lovely ballad lamenting the passing of the great clipper ships. It was called Yankee Clipper and went something like this: She was tall, she was handsome, topsails golden glory, flying like a dolphin fast and free. And we called her the Sunrise, she brought good weather with her, she was the greatest(?) Yankee Clipper that ever sailed the sea. Refrain: Now she's gone down the river, she's gone, gone, forever, the classic yankee clipper is gone. I know more of it. But not the whole thing. Thanks, Southmoon P.S. Anybody else here a 'veteran'of the New York City Eagle Tavern in the seventies? |

Subject: Lyr Add: CLASSIC YANKEE CLIPPER (C O'Hegarty) From: Anglo Date: 27 May 01 - 10:54 AM She was tall, she was handsome, topsails gold and glowing, Flowing like a dolphin fast and free. And they called her the Sunrise, she brought good weather with her, The fairest Yankee beauty that ever sailed the sea. Now she's gone down the river, she's gone, gone, forever, oh the classic Yankee clipper is gone. It was a dream to sail on her, to feel the breeze upon you, To feel her responding to the wheel, To taste the salt spray on you as you plow through the water, That same way again I know I'll never feel. Though sometimes in hard weather we had tough times together, oh, me and the Yankee beauty of my dreams. For like the wind she was contrary and I had to be wary, But then all leaders are like that so it seems. By Charles O'Hegerty. It's on the Starboard List CD (Charlie with David Jones & Peter Marston) which is a compilation of their two LPs. |
