Back in 1997, in connection with an exhibit at the Washington State Historical Museum in Tacoma, I published an Esperanto songbook with English annotations under the title Donu Hejmon al mi... ("Oh, give me a Home...") — the occasion was a commemoration of the early-20th-century Home Colony, a communal outfit where Esperanto was on the agenda. I have just posted the table of contents in La Lilandejo FWIW.

wow - what an amnazing resource. I've bookmarked the page so I can spend some time looking through your work later. Thank you for posting it here.

When I was in Graduate School (linguistics) in the mid1980s, I met a number of Esperanto scholars in the Scoence Fiction community. Sadly most of them have passed away. Somewhere I have some field recordings from 1987 of people at a dead dog party in Pasadena singing Christmas Carols in Esperanto. I'll have to dig them out and pray that the tapes haven't degraded. Would you be interested? The one song I know I have for sure is "I Wonder I as I Wander" sung acapella in Esperanto. I don't remember how nmany of the others I managed to get fully on tape.

I would be very much interested. (And no version of "I Wonder as I Wander" — presumably the second "I" in "I Wonder I as I Wander" is merely epenthetic! — is among the 148 Esperanto Christmas Carol texts in my online hymnal! I'd love to have that one if you won't tell G Schirmer!)

PS I think Forrest Ackerman is still alive (if he was one of your acquaintances in Pasadena) and of course Harry Harrison. Are there any great young Science Fiction writers anymore (Esperantophone or not)?

Actually if your tape is good enough it might be of interest to an Esperanto radio station (such as Radio Verda or Polskie Radio, or one of the dozens of other stations broadcasting—mostly over the Internet, a few shortwave or FM—in Esperanto: Esperanto Radio Archives) come Advent. And FWIW I did not mean to imply that Forrie's survival was contingent on your acquaintance ;-).

Hano - yes, I know Forry who I believe is still alive. I was introduced to him in 1986 as a graduate student by Julie Schwartz (Julius Schwartz of DC Comics). Forry sang me a few songs in Esperanto once in a car on the way back to Harlan Ellison's house when Wendayne was still alive. They were still speaking then but not shortly therafter. That must have been 1988. I truly treasure my memories of Wendayne. She was some kinda woman! I never got to spend that much time with her since it was the end of her life and Forry being the big ham kinda dominated the time we spent together which suited her just fine.

I came to call him "Uncle Forry" the way most younger writers/pulisher types do. I fell out of contact with him shortly after Julie's death two yeats ago. julie and Forry were both memers of First Fandom which is how I met them both actually. I was 19 or 20 I guess and doing a combined BS and Masters. I took some time out to go to a Boscone with a friend and a bunch of teens rolled out of bed in jammies with teddy bears to go to some horrid 8 or 9 Am panel on First Fandom. We were the only audience members and the FF fellows treated us like their grandchildren.

it was lovely and the beginning of a 20 year fast friendship for me and Julie. We travelled the world together with Julie getting me my first publishing job with ANALOG and ISAAC ASMIMOV's Magazines on 1988.   I moved out here to LA as a writer and development exec in 1990.

Bill Warren, a film critic friend of mine for over 20 years now will maybe be able to bring me up to speed on how Forry's doing. he sold the Ackermansion a numer of years back and was involved in a nasty libel lawsuit against the guy he sold FAMOUS MONSTERS to. I unfortunately wound up as a witness and getting hassled by that fellow before it all sorted out. Forry prevailed and let me off the hook on testifying since I was pregnant at the time and having a troubled prgenancy. I later miscarried. I certainly hope Forry doesn't believe the trial had anything to do with that and would hurt me to have him elieve that.

My happiest memory of Forry was sitting next to him at a screening joe Dante arranged at the MPA of a stellar print of Bride of Frankenstein. It was really special. I used to also run into him at the House of Pies a lot. For the record, he told me once his favorite pie their was bavarian chocolate banana cream.


As for the Espertanto tapes - I will dig them out of storage and pray they haven't suffered any damage since the recording. Forry very likely was at that dead dog party since it was ack when Locson was still at the Pasadena Hilton. I lived in NYC then but came out every year with Julie. I recall the singer eing a 14 year old girlwho was the daughter of an esparanto enthusiast and they were not from los Angeles. I did have the prewence of mind to write down her name and address but whether that info is with the tape, who can say. All those field recordings are mixed in with my Mohawk recordings and other Christmas carol field recordings. i remembered it ecuase i love the song itself and the gal who sang it had a haunting voice something akin to Gillian Welch.

O dear, hano - When I say I must look for it, I mean literally go into a storage unit and excavate from among hundreds of old cassette tapes. I certainly didn't mean to imply I would have it right away.

However, your enthusiasm will cause me to actaully do what I said i would and seriously look for it. There were 2 other Esperanto carols on the tape but they don't stand out in my memory at all. all 3 were sung by the teen gal with I wonder As I Wander (english title I realize) being the only one sung without accompaniment.

I do recall some of the other people who were there (scientologists actually) and that bodes well for their actually being photos. That was back when Bridge Publications was throwing fabulous room parties for re-issues of Hubbard SF titles and the dead dog party in question was held in a suite they paid for. They ALWAYS had an offficial photog there snapping many rolls of film and actually writing down names.

Loscon was always so much fun. I wish I could recall why I stopped going. It might have been because of all the deaths of dear friends over the years who I used to meet up with there. I don't think I set foot at one since Bill Rostler died.

"Mi miras dum mi iras" would be the obvious first line (I'll be surprised if it turns out to be anything else) but I have so far not solved the rhyme-scheme issues in the rest of the song.
