Subject: RE: Help: PMN..Winter Gathering From: Suffet Date: 07 Jun 01 - 09:21 PM Jim, You have so many fine musicians in the Southern Appalachians that it seems almost heretical to suggest importing some Yankees from the New York area, but I'm going to stick my neck out by giving you two suggestions for the Friday night concert. 1. The Johnson Girls. This is an all female a capella quintet that sings sea chanteys and other maritime music. They were one of the groups that performed at the Ships to Save the Waters benefit concert in New York last year, and a tired and sickly Pete Seeger rose like Lazarus from the dead when they started singing. Their effect is that magical. I know that we should wait until we hold a gathering along the coast, but maybe the Johnson Girls are what we need to provide some balance on the concert bill. 2. Water Sign. They are a quartet comprising two men and two women, and their harmonies are unbelievable. Most of their material is contemporary folk written in traditional style, and their instrumental arrangements suit the material perfectly. Ny the way, Mudcatter Joy Bennett is a member of both the Johnson Girls and Water Sign. And she tells me she is also a member of PMN. (This is an entirely unsolicited endorsement. Unsolicited by her, that is.) And as for workshops, you can sign me up to do the Woody Guthrie Song Swap and Jam Session. It was well attended in Queens, in Hartford, and in High Falls. --- Steve |

Subject: RE: Help: PMN..Winter Gathering From: SINSULL Date: 07 Jun 01 - 09:34 PM Jim, I am going to jump in with both feet and suggest Sorcha Dorcha. Inobu, Larry Otway, can supply stats. You may also want to consider Allan C., one of our quieter members, sure to charm the ladies and impress the rest. |

Subject: RE: Help: PMN..Winter Gathering From: InOBU Date: 18 Jan 02 - 08:48 AM BY the way, thanks Sinsul... Sorcha Dorcha, now with the GREAT Mazzmlani Swift will be performing at the friday night concert. Swift and Otway will be performing their fantastic set, Swift's Modest Proposal (including An Phis Fluich)... Amadou Diallo, Yvette's Song and Engine 33 as well... Peggy Seeger and Si Kahn are on the bill, and be their or be square. Cheers Larry |
|
Subject: RE: Help: PMN..Winter Gathering From: Suffet Date: 30 Jan 02 - 06:35 AM Mazzmlani Swift's fiddling was fantastic, and Larry Otway's singing held the audience spellbound. However, somewhere through Sorcha Dorcha's last song, Larry's uileann pipes sprung a leak, and he had to keep pumping like a madman to keep the music flowing. Good job! The next PMN Summer Gathering will take place near Beacon, New York, from May 31 through June 2, 2002. The next Winter Gathering will be held in Syracuse, New York, probably the last weekend of 2003. If you are a musician, or simply a music lover, who is interested in using music to support struggles for peace, freedom, human rights, and justice -- if you feel musically and politically akin to Larry Otway Peggy Seeger, Si Kahn, Pete Seeger, Pat Humphries, Guy and Candie Carawan, Kim and Reggie Harris, Charlie King, Karen Brandow, Bob Blue, Joel Landy, Tom Neilson, and Colleen Kattau to name just a few -- then these gatherings are a place for you. Subject: RE: Peoples Music Network Winter Gathering From: GUEST,Marilyn Date: 14 Feb 05 - 07:47 AM Just a quick report on the recent PMN Winter Gathering in New York City, January 28-30, 2005: The Friday night MANY VOICES concert at the Brooklyn High School of the Arts was completely sold out, with the 540 seat auditorium filled beyond capacity. The concert featured Pete Seeger along with a number of local choruses. 256 people registered for the Saturday and Sunday events at the Reniassance Charter School in Jackson Heights, Queens. In addition, another 16 people from the school community attended one or more of the events as guests of PMN. Approximately 25 children and at least an equal number of adults attended the Saturday morning MANY VOICES children's concert which featured Pete Seeger, Takako Nagumo, and MacDougal Street Rent Party. (Takako is a traditional Japanese story teller and singer who is making quite a name for herself on the folk festival circuit. Although a Japanese national, Takako grew up in Los Angeles, and she easily switches back and forth between "California girl" and old Japan.) 92 people joined PMN or renewed their membership. 91 acts (individuals or groups) performed in the Saturday MANY VOICES Round Robin concert. So many people signed up that the evening session had to be split into two rooms. The 2006 Winter Gathering will take place in the Amherst, MA, area. The 2007 Winter Gathering will take place in Philadelphia. The 2005 Summer Gathering will take place the first weekend in June at Camp Epworth, near High Falls, NY. |

Subject: RE: Peoples Music Network Winter Gathering From: Charley Noble Date: 05 Oct 09 - 10:36 AM Steve- It's been years since I've attended one of these. The last time, back in the 1980's, I coordinated a workshop on housing organizing songs. Since then, thanks to Mudcat, I've actually learned who composed "Pity the Downtrodden landlord." Subject: RE: Peoples Music Network Winter Gathering From: billhudson Date: 05 Oct 09 - 11:00 AM It's always a lot of fun in going to one of these gathering. Sue and I might try to make it. I now live in Roanoke,Va. so if anyone needs a place to stay over night let me know. As to Pete Seeger being there...I think he wants to stay close to Toshi for the time being. Still Pickin' B.H. |

Subject: RE: Peoples Music Network Winter Gathering From: Suffet Date: 05 Oct 09 - 11:27 AM Bill is right. I spoke with Pete (and I was also one of his back-up singers at Ecofest in Central Park in NYC yesterday), and he says that he may attend the PMN Winter Gathering for one day, but that he prefers not to stay overnight away from home. It's much too early to say anything for sure, but if he attends at all it will probably not be as a concert headliner. --- Steve |

Subject: RE: Peoples Music Network Winter Gathering From: sing4peace Date: 05 Oct 09 - 11:40 AM I haven't been able to get to a PMN/SFS (Peoples Music Network for Songs of Freedom and Struggle) gathering for a few years but my favorite two features are the Saturday night round robin and the Sunday morning songs of spirit. If you haven't been, it's worth every dollar and hour invested. In singing solidarity, Joyce |
