We get quite a few depending on what the local Public TV picks up on, as that's where they tend to play. I've always thought someone could make it big with a "Britcom" channel on cable. At varying times, I've watched Are You Being Served?, Black Adder, The Decline and Rise of Reginald Perrin, Butterflies, Fawlty Towers, Good Neighbors, Yes Minister (and Yes Prime Minister), Monty Python, Benny Hill, Dr. Who, Hitchhiker's Guide, and quite a few others.

Some good discussion on this thread too: Mrs. Slocomb's Pussy

I kinda got a kick out of Absolutly Fabulous. Every ocne in a while I'll catch an old episode of London's Burning, which I like. I guess it helps to get BBC America.

Uh, Spaw, you gotta get to the city more often, sweetie. BBC-America has been on cable for a few years now, in fact, other than the SciFi channel, it's about the only thing worth watching on cable here. Oh, and they call them Brticoms in their ads.

Love most of the ones you listed, as well as To The Manor Born, British Men Behaving Badly, and a bunch of others, as well as the dramas such as In A Land of Plenty, In the Red (I think was the name of it), Second Sight and several others.

Absolutely loathe League of Gentlemen and Roysten Vasey. Can't even watch the adverts.:-)

Masterpiece Theatre has been a long running favorite on public television here. Cable TV offers broadcasts of Parliament's proceedings (Is that a "Britcom"? *BG*). We used to get The Two Ronnies.

I use to love Blakes 7 when I was a kid. I've always loved the theme, but have no idea what it is or way to find any kind of a copy of it.
I've always thought Tom Baker (the British actor, not the composer) was an entertaining actor. A little weird though.
My favorte TV shows would be The Simpsons, Married With Children, News Radio, and David Letterman. Yes there all American, but so am I!

Favorite American shows... hmmm...

My all time favorites... ABC World News Now, back when Mark Mullen and Thalia Assuras (sp?) were the co-anchors, and Northern Exposure, both of which are now extinct. (But I've got pretty much all of the Northern Exposures on tape.)

I liked all the Doctors I ever saw. I haven't seen Sylvester McCoy tho. I liked Patrick Traughton and Jon Pertwee quite a bit but I must say Doctor Baker was my favorite too.

I really liked and miss The Good Neighbors, Richard Briers and Felicity Kendall.

Prime Suspect was a great series and Helen Mirren has always been a turn on for me. Can you believe they wanted Goldie Hawn to play the Jane Tennyson role in an Ametrian version?

My favorite Brit import series was Lovejoy. Being an antique collector and a mystery freak that show as a hit with me.

kat, I have commuicomm which used to be Platte Valley and they dont' carry BBC America.......I only have two PBS channels---Lincoln and Denver--and they don't list very much of what either you or spaw have spoken of.

Besides which,I can't understand an awful lot of those British shows, they sound like they have marbles in their mouths and for the Deaf Lady, lip reading doesn't help here.

I do have SciFi channel, but I don't watch enough to really keep up on the series stuff, so I am usually totally lost at C.....I suppose I really should get Closed Captioned, huh? I watch a lot of Discovery, Animal Planet and TLC.

These days I'm enjoying BBC's As Time Goes By. Could be an old one- but it's new to me. Great natural acting.

I used to really like Ballykissangel- they lost me after the second death. The first death occurred to a single woman who had fallen in love with a priest- and he was planning to leave the priesthood for her.

The second death happened to the husband of a woman who was discontented with her marriage and had found someone else... There seemed to be a judgmental pattern developing I didn't care for and I haven't watched since.

Give me The Naked Chef, 2 Fat Ladies, Red Dwarf, and Bottom and I could be a very happy man... Only because I've watched Blackadder and Fawlty Towers kinda to death...

I'd rather gouge my eyes out with my thumbs than watch Are You Being Served!

North American pap? Dark Angel was a really entertaining show this past season... 2 words... Pillowy Lips!

You aren't supposed to like Hyachinth, just like you weren't supposed to like JR Ewing. Sometimes the worst people on TV are the most fascinating. The 1900 House was one of the best reality shows to come along in a long time. Upstairs, Downstairs and I, Claudius were excellent. PBS censored Claudius, an episode that involved exposed breasts. An independent station in NYC ran the series uncensored and there was nothing offensive about the censored parts. PBS needs to lighten up. The Brits get my eternal gratitude for Penelope Keith, (To the Manor Born, Good Neighbors). We need more shows with her.

On this side the pond, I'm a huge fan of Frasier - it knocks the spots off most British sitcoms (how anyone can find Are You Being Served funny beats me).
It reminds me of my own experience of how badly some britcoms travel. I was staying in a hotel in New York and the morning alarm was set using the television - a huge thing the size of a a car door just inches from the bed.
I needed to get up early the next day, so I set the alarm for 6.30am, absent-mindedly pressing any old channel button before collapsing across the bed somewhat the worse for wear.
And so it was, with a muzzy head, jet-lag and hangover, that I was dragged from the ahiry arms of Morpheus at some ungodly hour by rasping saxophone music and the sight of a bright orange Benny Hill being chased around some park at super-speed by a bunch of bikin-clad bimbos.
I really thought I'd woken up in hell.

Sorry mate, hitting the US with Telletubbies was just a case of "collateral damage", the idea was revenge on the Australians for "Neighbous" and "Home and Away", you just got caught in the cross-fire.

Good Luck

I have a few Brit show lyrics, but I would love some more - anyone like to share?

There are too many Britcoms and Brit-series that I like to try listing them all.

Generally, I will watch British tv shows in preference to anything else. Have you seen the movies Trainspotting, and Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels? Worth a look, if you get yourself into that whacky-weird British humour frame of mind. If you expected something normal you would be sadly disappointed. An Oz movie worth seeing is called Two Hands, in much the same vein.

CarolC, when you say the "first Doctor" Who, do you mean the old man with long white hair, in the very first black & white series? William Hartnell was his name, I think. I'd love to see that series again. I heard that the BBC trashed most of the original tapes because they didn't think that they would have lasting value. Tom Baker is my favourite Dr Who. I can honestly say that I got my first B&W tv - after leaving home - to watch Dr Who, and my first colour tv because it was better in colour.

We get the usual reruns of a lot of British sitcoms here on the westcoast too, that have been mentioned above, in fact Hamish MacBeth has been run three times now and the others have been going for years.

What I really enjoy are the British crime series and dramas, unfortunately I can never remember most of the titles. One particularly well done is about a police detective who is loosing his sight.

Others that I have enjoyed in the past were Robbie Coultrain's Cracker and the Helen Miren Prime Suspect series, the British original version of Traffik and Jimmy Nail's stuff. He could put his Crocodile Shoes under my bed any day. You can't beat the Brits for characterization and portrayal of the human condition. I also prefer the portrayal of children in British films and TV productions, the children are less slick than those portrayed in North America.
