This is a fantastic singer from Pakistan - I hope I've spelt it right. Anyway - does anyone know which of his albums are worth buying? I've only heard snippets but I don't know what's good.

An amazing voice, what soul. Yes sadly died about a year ago ago aged only in his 40s. Don't know much about his albums but try the soundtrack for "Dead Man Walking" where he does a terrific duet with Eddie Vedder.

Qwallii singer - Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan died in Aug 97 i think. Mustt Mustt and Songs of Love and Devotion on Real World Music are very good begining points. Also try Rapture available on Nascent. Enjoy.

Saw him in '94 in the Washington, DC area. His music filled the heart and the hall in a most amazing way. I don't think you could go wrong with any of his recordings; I'd simply pick one (Mikey Joe's suggestions are all excellent) and immerse yourself. (If you do a search on the internet, do note that Mikey Joe has the correct spelling of his first name, i.e., with an "N".)

In the same genre, I have an old vinyl album that I like a lot, by the Sabri Brothers, "Qawwali: Sufi music from Pakistan," Nonesuch Records, 1978.

The All Music Guide has a lot more information about Qawwali(click).

Sabbri Brothers are fantastic

Nusrat also taught Qawwali music at a University (I think Seattle) for a few years just before his death

Hey, what's the name of that album he did with Michael Brook...can't think of it, but the cover has a close-up picture of a green thorn against a red background...that one's pretty good, though I'd have to say Mustt Mustt is my personal favorite. The other albums can get a little tedious sometimes when there are only four tracks and each one is about 10 to 20 minutes long. Nusrat & Party can also be found on the excellent cd "Passion Sources", a compilation by Peter Gabriel of the artists who inspired him to create his "Passion (Soundtrack to the Last Temptation of Christ)" album. Both of those cds are on Peter Gabriel's label, RealWorld Records. enjoy.

ummmmmm...yeah Nusrat did lots with Peter Gabriel's label. Sometimes you have to be reaaaaaaal careful choosing a Nusrat album. Many many many people have tried to leverage his fame by releasing, re-releasing, remixing, mixing with trance or club music or Banghra music. The Peter gabriel label albums are pretty safe to pick up...if it has funky designs and floating hands it might be club music...if it has a poor quality photo, it might be pirated or badly copied.

And if you like Nusrat and/or Sabbri Brother's try checking out some Rai music (pronounced like "rye" bread and I think I spelled it correctly). The undisputed King of Rai is Khalid and the self-proclaimed prince of Rai is that guy who sings on Sting's newer song.

Good morning, Sylvie. The Michael Brook collaboration is "Real World".It's pretty good but I would have to say that his traditional material is better. I had a 3 cassette set some years ago but a I loaned it to a young Indian lady of my acquaintance who disappeared with it. I saw a television concert on or around the night he died and it was rivetting. All the best from the fB XX

I just can't imagine that the words "terrific duet with Eddie Vetter" could possibly have a referent.

This guy must be great!

Alex, he is very good. Qwaali is a sort of free-style Islamic musical prayer...very sort of jazz form. By this I mean that there is only a very basic structure laid out in the beginning and only a few pre-planned lyrics...the rest develops and grows as the song continues. So its not just the ability of the singer's voice, but his ability to freestyle and the ability of the musicians to play along as the whole song develops. Neat stuff.

Now I remember - the collaboration with Michael Brooke is called Nightsong (or something like that). There is one good cd I liked with a pinkish background cover on it (can't think of that title either!...hmmm...maybe "The Last Prophet"?) - anyway the first track on it was Maki Maki, I remember that, at least. Very catchy and upbeat, I thought. I kept going around singing "Muck-y, Muck-y" all the time when I first got it. ;)
