Can anyone point me in the right direction for a crack for Opera 5.2?

Many thanks

--- I don't think this sort of thing is appropriate in the Mudcat, so I deleted GUEST's answer to his/her own question below.---
---Besides, a quick Google search will yield plenty of crack sites on the web for anyone interested in that sort of thing.---

Here's the Opera website for a start anyway: http://www.opera.com/

(I rather thought this thread was going to be about that recent production of La Boheme where they were all dopers!)

tsk...Opera is totally free, if you are willing to accept a few ads, and not expensive if you are not..and they do NOT track you or spy on you.

But if you must look for cracks, there are better places to look than here.

Does anyone use this and if so what are the advantages to any other browser? Is it faster, more complete, etc..? Is it worth the space it would occupy on a hard drive?

Banjer, I think Opera 'may' cause me to finally rethink my allegience to Netscape....it has MANY features that are valuble and new, but whether YOU will appreciate them can only be judged by you.

It can open new windows in a different manner, allowing easy movement between pages...it has a 'different' bookmarks setup, though I am sort of beginning to like it..it has keyboard shortcuts for almost everything, if you are the sort who can remember them. It is noticably faster...it (the newest version) has 'mouse gesture' scrolling, which allows hands-free reading at your pace.

There are Java feature...security features....user defined choices as to where to put various toolbars...and MUCH more.

It IS a different feel from my old Netscape, so I wont make any final decisions yet...but...wow! a REAL alternative!

Can Opera support milti-users the way the netscape communicator can???

well.. I tried it.. and it doesn't see to be much better or worse than any other browser, but that's just after a cursory glance...

There are a lot of good features that I suspect may lead me to more in depth study... that and it's almost unbelievably small!!

;-)

and yes, Clinton...I asked that very question about multiple users for Opera in alt.comp.freeware, because my wife & I have totally different ideas about bookmarks and organization....and it seems someone has written a special program just to make new profiles easy....

go to this site and take a look.

BTW...there is a LOT in the help file, neatly HTML'd and organized....it will take a few days to work thru it..read the hints that pop up also...(and you CAN import your Netscape bookmarks)

One of the nice things about Opera, which I use some times, is that it is NOT Bloatware. Much smaller that the two "biggies". It works quite well. I've never had aproblem with it. Some special functions in Netscape and/or Explorer aren't covered. However,if it is in the HTML standard, it seems to be in the browser.

I'm a recent convert from IE 5, and would certainly recommend it.

I particularly like the way that the Stop and Reload button have been combined. A small thing, but to my mind very elegant.

Bill D,

Do you know if the 'button bar' can be configured beyond 'simple' or 'full?' I prefer a minimal toolbar and would like to get rid of the 'find' 'print' and 'hotlist' buttons, and put the address bar on the same line. You can do that in IE. Any ideas?

Thanks

Ed

I haven't found it yet, Ed...but Opera has their own set of newsgroups, with one being just for a 'wish list'!..Others address feature and bugs...you might look there..(I intend to myself as soon as I have a spare couple hours...I tend to get 'involved')

I tried the shareware version of OPERA for a while; did not really "hate" it, but found that it was not quite as "intuitively useable" as NS, had some features that were more of a distraction / confusion that usefull, and had an annoying similarity to AOL in that it imposed some intrusive popups on my desktop that were highly resistant to removal. I tend to be rather sceptical of any utility that wants to wrest control away from the user.

Perhaps a newer edition will be more user-freindly, and I could be persuaded to give it another chance in due season.

In the meantime I use a mix-and match system of Netscape as my browser, and EUDORA for a mail server. I like Netscape Mail all right, but it has become very unstable on our system and page-fault crashes nearly every time we attempt to use it. This quirk has persisted through an update of our PC and replacement of the hard-drive. As far as browsers, I could not determine any significant advantage of OPERA over NS Communicator, and I really don't mind using NS Explorer 5 as a backup; some web-based programs will only work on that platform.
I have deleted MS "Outlook Express" mail server from the HD completely due to it's infamous vunerability to virus and hack-attack.

Uncle Jaque... "found that it was not quite as "intuitively useable" as NS"...

In other words, you were accustomed to Netscape after years of using it, and Opera was something different?

Opera IS a bit like a 747 control panel for the first few uses...lots of options and arcane decisions...but you will soon figure out which bells & whistles you need and/or want...and the GOOD ones make the exercise worth it, for me...(still exploring after 4 days)

'view'/'hotlist'...uncheck 'docked'...

and in file/prefs/windows uncheck 'open bookmarks in new window'

these will get you close to what you are used to

and it seems that way, the bookmarks can be in a minimized window, sized as you please...all the time

ain't it grand!

I'm starting to lean towards deleting Netscape!! It's like the end of an era... I've been with it since it was Mosaic!

well, I have plenty of disc space for now, and I still like the Netscape tricks for bookmark filing better, so I will just play and see...(but you can always get Netscape back if you want..some guy has an archive/collection of ALL versions..you want to play with Mosiac again for nostalgia? He's got it!

I downloaded Opera last week & just logged on the Mudcat. I see my name appearing in th From: line now, but when I try to get to my personal pages, I'm getting prompted to join.

I have set my preferences to accept cookies.

Any ideas? I'll ask in the help forum, but it's looking like an Opera thing so I thought I'd try here first.

As soon as I asked, the threads page prompted me with my number of active messages, instead of "Membership has its priveledges." When I clicked on the link, I was still prompted to join.

I may solve this on my own, but any pointers will be apprecitated.

oh..Burke...each browser has to have a cookie set for it. I assume you did that, since here you are...but I DO know that it makes a difference to me which door I come in for different Mudcat servers...going directly to the threads gives me my name, going just to "mudcat.org does not...why? *shrug*

I'd have to be there and do tests to make a guess..

It would appear that when I tried to check my messages, I was using a link I'd used before I set my cookie so I was getting the cached page.

Looking at a new thread gave me the From: Burke, looking at one I'd viewed a few minutes earlier gave me an empty From.

I'm finding that when I read a thread, do not post, hit Forum Home; I get the thread list from cache instead of the refreshed one. I see my preferences will only check every 5 hours.

I really like the way hitting Z takes me back so fast & does not reload. Suggestions on the cache setting so I can get the really current thread page and still get some of this great speed?

ahh...I see! yes, I am noticing that cache thing, too...I am looking now at the 'history & cache' settings... It appears that you have total control over how often it actually updates, as opposed to using a cached page. Nice, once you have figured it out..*grin*...(reading thru the help files and studying settings now)

I think it is a matter of setting 'documents' to always, if one posts to Mudcat a lot,,otherwise, the secret would be just to remember to 'refresh' Mudcat frequently, and not have it checking ALL the sites you surf to....
