There are some pretty good recipes I heard of for trolls... I'll ask Jande.

Apparently, you can't have a really good festivity without at least one dish made of them!

Keeping it simple - My exposure to Internet jargon is fairly patchy. I have learned to decipher some of the ROFL-type acronyms and have bookmarked lists of them for personal reference. I have yet to work out precisely what you all mean when you talk about Flamers and now Trolls. I have made guesses based on some of the recent threads blighted by anonymous postings, but am not sure if my interpretations are acurate.
Can one of you give me some concise definitions of what constitutes a Flamer (which I thought was something they sell at Burger King) and a Troll, plus any other related words or phrases which I ought to know!
Kind Regards,
Geoff.

Troll A term used to define a public message (either on a USENET newsgroup or other public message board on an online service) that is posted for the sole purpose of offending people and/or generating an enormous flood of non-topic replies

Taken from Netcom Digital Dictionary

Flame To send nasty or insulting messages, usually in response to someone's having broken the rules of netiquette

Taken from Netlingo - The Internet Dictionary

Ed Pellew, I'm not arguing with ayour definitions, but

What is a "non topic reply"? If it means what I think it does, there is a whole lot of trolling going on. There have been several threads lately consisting of 100% seemingly inane one-liners involving small groups of initiates. Not comparable to "flaming" but a bit irritating nonetheless.

As I had heard it described, "flaming" traditionally consists of great masses of imaginative and highly obscene invective, in which the original dispute gets quickly lost sight of. Not much of that on Mudcat, but good to nip rudeness before it gets anywhere near real flaming.

Inviting "Non topic replies" as a definition of trolling - that's a new one to me.

If that means replies which aren't directly related (on this site) to folk and blues, and so forth, it's not what I'd call a very useful definition.

Within individual threads that kind of thing can be irritating, when they stop some interesting topic being pursued, but within the forum as a whole, no way. The range of topics, and they relationship between the non-music ones and the music/folklore ones - it's for me what makes the Mudcat so much more interesting than the run of trainspotting sites. (Together with the superb architecture of the Mudcat which knocks every other forum or newsgroup into a cocked hat.)

Add another Lyric not found. "Abilene Forever!" (The Texas Abilene). One line is "It's free of sin and dry as a bone- Abikene forever!"

Troll comes from "trolling for bites". It's basically the internet equivalent of offensive conversation-fishing. It would be like someone coming up to me and saying offensive things about Witches. Just an ignorant person looking for a fight. And I've done it myself... but hopefully not in a truly horrible way.

Amos - I heard that marinated troll brains can be quite a delicacy, if you can get them. But it usually takes a lot more than one troll to feed a crowd on just that, so other, less gourmet body parts are often used as well.

Where I come from (my first group on usenet was alt.games.creatures)we roast trolls on a barbeque.

We have one portable metal rusted one generously loaned to the group by one of the members, and we have the use of one of those lovely brick backyard ones made available by another.

We have discovered over the years that trolls have either cabbage or brocolli for brains, and therefore troll-brains are usually reserved for the vegetarians in the group, and can be either consumed in various salads or other cooked recipes.

The rest of the animal is rather "gamey" tasting, but marinated in a fairly piquant and spicy BBQ sauce are found by the non-vegetarian members of that group to be decidely delicious.

There always seems to be way too much of a troll to go round despite their diminutive stature, and so Troll-S'mores are a next day favourite.

This group has found that since the advent of the Troll BBQ, usenet trolls tend to avoid the group, and any hapless one that, ignorant of our favourite celebration, stumbles arrogantly upon the group, seems to disappear almost as rapidly as they arrived. I suppose coming face to face with an eager and delighted group hungry for troll delicacies, and always ready to use a troll thread to celebrate with a big party, and whose members fight over the honour of being in charge of the BBQs.... Well... let's just say that the encounter must be simply overwhelming.

~ Jande (who has been offline of late and misses this place)

I think our member Troll is a different breed. Must be one of those ancient noble Trolls that you sometimes hear about in legends. They are cool, and not to be mistaken with the usual newsgroup trolls.

Thanks for pointing that out, MMario. Wouldn't want anyone to start BBQing OUR Troll by mistake.
