'S far as I know there is no actual song called "New Mexico, Land of Enchantment". Maybe the one you are looking for is this, which was written by the daughter of Pat Garrett (the man who shot Billy the Kid), and was adopted as the state song for, naturally, New Mexico:

Thanks but Michael Martin Murphey and The Sons of the San Joaquin have recorded Land of Enchantment New Mexico in the last few years I belive that Michael wrote the tune.Bob

Jim, the lyrics posted first in this thread are the words to the official song of NM.

We had to learn it as kiddos in grade school.

If you don't know the tune, thank your lucky stars. Its pathetic.

I vaguely remember MMM's song, but its been a while since I've heard it. It beats the official song hands down.

Raised in Santa Fe, over 50 years ago, I knew about Elizabeth Garrett's song, but we never sang it. It was mentioned occasionally, usually with some humorous remark. Santa Fe, at the time, was still over 50% Hispanic, and much of what I remember of the music in school was of traditional Spanish or Mexican pieces. In chorus, we sang some of the old favorite parlor songs of the 19th c., especially Foster, known to both Hispanics and Anglos (to the locals, anyone with a non-Spanish name).

As freightdawg says, the tune is pathetic; and the words equally so. I have my grandmother's original sheet music of the piece- it is good for a laugh.

The MMM piece is trite, but the tune is far superior to that of the state song.

I think the motto "Land of Enchantment" originated in the 1920s in Santa Fe Railroad tourist blurbs, but not sure). It did not become the official State motto until 1999, but had been used for many years.

The official state song is "Oh Fair New Mexico," by Elizabeth Garrett.

There is no "official state ballad."

Re. Absence of Sheet Music to " Land of Enchantment " by M.M.Murphey.

I am totally mystified ! This appears to me to be some small minded owner of the copyright to this beautiful melody that refuses publication of the music in Sheet Music form. Why ? I just cannot understand this " dog in the manger " attitude when so many enthusiastic musicians obviously want to play this song as written in it's original format. Baffles me!!!

I notice that Frank Staplin dismisses this Music as " trite " which in my dictionary reads as - " dull,worn,hackneyed. "

He has obviously not heard this music played as a Bolero with sensuous Conga drum rhythms in the Latin manner!

He is of course entitled to his opinion, but perhaps as he is getting on in years his mind has become " trite " ?
