Subject: Feudin', a-Fussin', and a-Fightin'
From: GUEST,--seed
Date: 18 Jul 01 - 11:13 PM

This song was popular sometime in the Forties or early Fifties. I know a bit of it but I need to fill in the gaps.

FEUDIN', A-FUSSIN', AND A-FIGHTIN'

Feudin', a-fussin', and a-fightin,
Sometimes it gets to be excitin'. Don't like them orn'ry neighbors down by the creek;
We'll be plumb outa neighbors next week.

Grandma, poor old Grandma,
Someone went ant shot poor grandma,
She lies neath the clover,
Someone caught her bendin' over,
Pickin' up a daisy.

Feudin', a-fussin', and a fightin',
This is a wrong that needs a-writin'

That's about all I can remember.

FEUDIN' AND FIGHTIN'
(Burton Lane and Al Dubin)

CHORUS: Feudin', a-fussin', and a-fightin',
Sometimes it gets to be excitin'
Don't like them ornery neighbors down by the creek,
We'll be plumb out of neighbors next week,

Grandma, poor ol' grandma,
Why'd they have to shoot poor grandma,
She lies 'neath the clover,
Someone caught her bendin' over, pickin' up a daisy,

Feudin', a-fussin', and a-fightin',
This is a wrong that needs a rightin',
Let's get that funeral service over so then....
We can start in a-feudin' again! CHO.

Feudin' and fightin' and a-fussin,'
That's all that's goin' on with us'n.
We are such neighborly people peaceful and sweet,
All except when we happen to meet.

Daughter, baby daughter,
Poisoned all the neighbors chickens.
Daughter hadn't oughter
Least 'till she could run like the dickens.
They hit her with a shovel!

Feudin' and fightin' and a-fussin'
No use a-standin' here a-cussin,'
Let's give our daughter a pistol now that she's four
And go feudin' and fightin' some more.

[Introduced by Pat Brester in the 1944 revue "Laffing Room Only." Reintroduced and best-selling record in 1947 by Dorothy Shay. Also recorded by Bob Wills, Ray Charles, Jimmy Durante, Jo Stafford, and others.]

..of Dorothy Shay. I've been having fun going through all the threads tonight with lyrics to her songs...something I've never taken the time to gather. Thanks all!!

Jim Dixon...you seem to post most of them...do you have more? I'd love to gather as much as I can, at least of the songs that are identified primarily with her.

oh, I see y ou are missing a verse..let's see if I can get it right

Fightin a fussin and a feudin
why do that sherriff keep inturdin'?
He was a curious critter, yep he was swell!
It's a shame he got pushed down the well!

Water, the old well water!
Gosh darn stuff don't taste like it otter!
Look here, city slicker,
that's why we all drink corn liquor!
(tasts better with you shoes off!)

Feudin a fussin and a fightin,
This ain't no corner you can brighten.
Polish off my shootin' iron, ma, I'm gettin' a yen
To go feuedin, a fussin,
A fuedin an' a fussin again!

(and Dorothy's leadin to the song...
Beyond the busy highways,
beyond the city strife,
we highly treasure,
and take great pleasure
in our plain
way of
Life.....

Oh, you can also listen for free on youtube..someone posted "video" of the song being played.

Kathy's supplement seems to anticipate a stanza in Tom Lehrer's "Irish Ballad". %^)

Dorothy Shay, "The Park Avenue Hillbillie" as she billed herself.

A nightclub act never to be forgotten. She had a lot of fun with uptown treatments of lowdown hillbilly subject matter, especially her trademark "The Martins and the Coys," and enough other material like "Feudin' and Fightin' to fill a couple of 78 rpm albums. She flourished in New York in the 1940s, as a sophisticated pop backslap at the rural folkies then rising to prominence. The supper club crowd loved her.

Last I looked you could still find her stuff on CD. And it is entertainin'.

Bob

Ms. Shay died in 1978. In her later years, she had a recurring role as Thelma in the TV series The Waltons.

She is often referred to in print as "The Park Avenue Hillbilly", but she always used the spelling "Hillbillie".

"The Martins and the Coys" was, of course, based on the real feud between the Hatfields and the McCoys, with, as they used to say on "Dragnet", the names changed to protect the innocent.

From the 1948 film "Feudin', Fussin', and a-Fightin'"
Sung by Dorothy Shay
