Someone was singing a couple lines from this very funny song the other nite, which is a very elaborate discussion of the fact that there is nothing to do in Toledo, Ohio on Saturday nite--couldn't remember where the song came from, or what the actual title was, or who performed it--just remembered that it was very funny--anyone know? Thanks in advance!

Sorry Ted.....I thought the additional was in that post, but the song was popularized by John Denver and written by Randy Sparks. I posted the little tale below from another thread which I'll also link. **********************************************************

Brief side note from an Ohioan............Toledo IS a boring ass place although the town does have its charms and has undergone several facelifts in the past 20 years or so. Still it's main claims to fame are as the home of Toledo Scale Corp. and as the home of Cpl. Klinger (Jamie Farr) on M*A*S*H. But I don't think the folks there had much of a sense of humor about this song.

About 30 years ago, when this song first came out, there was a local talk show out of Cincinnati that was shown on sister stations in Dayton, Columbus, Indianapolis, and Toledo. It was on WLW-TV and was the "Ruth Lyon's 50-50 Club." Her "second banana" took over after age an illness took its toll, a guy named Bob Braun. One of Braun's regulars was pseudo-folksinger named Rob Ryder and one day he sang "Toledo Ohio." Everybody thought it was a laugh except the Toledo audience who went NUTS!!! They boycotted WLW and hired attorneys to sue everyone in sight and it took a LOT of talking and apologizing to cool them off. The "50-50 Club" did a 2 week broadcast from Toledo icluding tours and local guests. Rob Ryder, who had been quite popular and a real fixture on the show, just kinda' slowly disappeared, never to be heard from again.

Thanks, Spaw--

I really did do a search, but it either didn't come up, or my reading glasses had a spot of dirt. As you may remember, I grew up in Michigan, so Toledo had a mystique all its own--Hell, for that matter, Maumee seemed like it had a lot of promise--

I actually spent time in Toledo occasionally, connected to my work, which was on the railroad--I can vouch for the fact that, contrary to Kenny Roger's claim, there was no "Bar in Toledo, across from the Depot" we would have found it, because we looked--

For those who haven't followed 'Spaw's links, the song was written by Randy Sparks, better(?) known as the founder and leader of the New Christy Minstrels. I also assumed that John Denver had written it, having heard him sing it in concert. Although I think he came from Colorado or one of those square states. And his name was Deutschendorf, which is a lot funnier than Sparks, so go figure.

Aloha,
Mark

Found more lyrics to SNITO at:

Also check out: http://www.cincinnatidancingpigs.com/concerts.html    for actual recordings of Denver's and the Mitchell Trio's gigs. Quite unbelieveably, some of the songs on this site (including some JD originals) have never been recorded elsewhere.

Extra Verse to Saturday Night in Toledo, Ohio

There once was a ship that went down on Lake Erie
Not far from Toledo one day
I met one poor sailor who'd floated to town
He told me quite frankly he'd rather have drowned
So you bring the flowers and I'll give the eulogy
We'll, once and for all, do it right
We'll all shed a tear for Toledo, Ohio
It dies every Saturday Night

Compared to the splendor of lovely Toledo
Great standards of beauty grow pale
The voice of Caruso emerges a grunt
Elizabeth Taylor become Allen Funt

Hope you enjoy,

Dick

Cincinnati Dancing Pigs is a great site created by John Marlowe. He has several CDs of John Denver and the late Mitchell Trio (DBJ), which contents lots of unrecorded songs. If you want it, you can email him for getting the CDs - which are of good sound quality and can be a great collection.

Hi, I'm a very big fan of John Denver and I like to sing his songs a lot. But sadly I haven't been able to find (or figure out) the chords of this particular one. Does anyone have them or know them? I'd really appreciate it.
