Okay, I know this isn't complete, and I don't remember exactly where the chorus gets repeated, but in hopes that somebody else can help, I will post what I have.

The italicized mumble is the part I can't remember.

Wasn't That A Mighty Day When the Needle Hit the Ground
as sung by Mike and Maggie
(I have no idea who wrote it!)

Well Seattle built a needle just to have a little fun
And to make a little money for that big deal "21"
And 'way up on that needle there's a restaurant goin' 'round
And tourists come from everywhere to see the people on the ground

Wasn't that a mighty day?
Wasn't that a mighty day?
Wasn't that a mighty day, Great God, that evening
When the Needle hit the ground.

One night a gentleman of renown was looking at the sky
And he chanced to train his telescope on a window lit nearby
And in that window standing there was a maid so fair
But for the hair upon her head, that maid so fair was bare
Wasn't that a mighty day (etc)

He shouted his discovery about this fair young lass
And all the menfolk crowded 'round just to see that lady's...
Wasn't that a mighty day (etc)

And something something something and their weight all gathered there
When someone chanced to notice ... they were sailing through the air
Wasn't that a mighty day (etc)

(there may be another verse goes here? I'm not sure)

It crashed across the fairgrounds with such a gruesome sound
And the Colosseum went tumbling, and the mess was all around
Wasn't that a mighty day (etc)

Well the restaurant kept rolling right on down Denny Way
It cut the Viaduct in half, and it landed in the bay
Wasn't that a mighty day (etc)

This was written and performed by Mike and Maggie Maloso (sp?) during the Seattle Worlds Fair in 1962. I'll e-mail Maggie now and see if she can jump in with the particulars. CHEERS, Bob(deckman)Nelson p.s. I KNOW I'm not spelling their last name correctly

I knew somebody would know!

Thanks, Deckman! I wait with bated breath!

PS for those wondering (i.e. nobody) the "big deal 21" refers to the official name of the 1962 world's fair, viz., The 21st Century Exposition.

Alex

Guess you had to be there. Song sounds similar to "The Galvaston Flood" whose chorus runs:

Wasn't that a mighty time,
Wasn't that a mighty time in the morning,
Wasn't that a mighty time,
When the storm winds struck our town.

One of the finest recordings of this song of the Galveston Flood was by the late Bob Gibson in the 1960's. CHEERS, Bob)deckman)Nelson

The chorus from mousethief's version is a direct parody of the Galveston Flood "Mighty Day" that I heard years ago from Barry Kornfeld. Only changes are in last word of the third line, (evening for morning) and the last line, where the Seattle song substitutes "Needle hit the ground" for "storm winds hit the town." The music for the verses must be different, however, because the words of mousethief's Seattle version don't seem to scan into Barry's Galveston one.

I remember last September, Storm Winds hit the town. Women and children were dying, Lord, Death was all around.

Here's a link -- with words (slight difference on the chorus), chords, and audio. http://www.ibiblio.org/jimmy/folkden/Mighty.html

It's a really powerful song. Plays great on a 12-string.

I remember the song sung by Mike & Maggie but alas, for so many years the same verse eludes me. Does anyone remember it? Deckman mentioned he knew Maggie's e-mail address: does she still know the lyrics? [sometimes they fade over time].

Do you remember Judy Collins singing at the 'Pamir House' and the very beautiful Joanie Mitchell singing at 'University Towers'?

From You Know You're in Washington When...: 101 Quintessential Places, People, Events, Customs, Lingo and Eats of the Evergreen State by Sharon Wootton, Maggie Savage (Guilford, Conn.: Insiders Guide, 2007), page 81:

The Needle fell over in a 1989 April Fool's joke by a local television station; emergency lines were swamped, and the station later apologized. But it wasn't the first "fall." In 1962 Maggie and Mike Moloso recorded "Wasn't it a Mighty Day When the Needle Hit the Ground." It became a regional hit, but World's Fair organizers were not amused. Abruptly, radio stations stopped playing the song.

Dang, I was here in April, 1989 and I missed that entirely. That's really funny.

I wonder if Deckman ever got ahold of Maggie?

I think I still have the 45 rmp record of this tune. Someone from out of state sent it to me during the 62 Fair in Seattle, as it was banned locally. I don't have a way to play it even if I find it.
Anyone think this is worth following up on? What could I do with this record if I find it?

The Needle is now fifty years old and, of course, they're trying to make a big deal out of it. Personally, I'd just love to see the song get some air-play again. And yes, I too would like to get my mits on a copy.

Maggie Maloso, who wrote and recorded the song, spent four hours at our home last Friday. We talked at length about rthe song and it's impact on Seattle at the beginning of the World's Fair in 1962. bob(deckman)nelson

I'm a Mid-Atlantic boy, not a Pacific Northwester, but I have a bunch of friends in Seattle and love the town, plus am a structural engineer to boot. This song appeals to my perverse sense of humor, definitely gotta adopt it!
