I have a tape of Reilly and Maloney on which they sing a song called "Leela, Leela."

The chorus goes, "Leela, Leela, this world is just a game; winners lose and losers win -- the game is still the same.

"Leela, Leela, this life is just a play; those who say don't know and those who know don't say.

"Leela, leela, this world is just a game; God will not forget the one who sings His name."

Although the tape is 'store-bought' (not bootlegged), it does not give the somgwriters' names for the titles on the tape.

Reilly and Maloney write a lot of their own songs, but far from all of them. I could transcribe the words from the tape, but I would really like to know who wrote it.

Does someone have a link that could help me, or can someone post this information? (If you have the words and chords already typed, it would be nice to have those posted, too.

But, as I said, mainly I wonder who wrote it.

I think Larry Hanks recorded this, too, and I think the name of the author is Schwartz. Not positive. Let me check around. When I first heard this song in the 60s back in Michigan, the singer said it was a translation of soundtrack from a Pakistani movie. I have no way of knowing if that's true either.

LAYLA LAYLA

The eyes of a baby behold everything from under,
The eyes of a young man behold his lover's face with wonder
The eyes of an old man look upon the flowing river
What of those whose eyes are one? They leave this wheel forever.

Chorus:

Layla, Layla, this life is but a game
Winners lose and losers win, and the game is still the same.
Layla, Layla, this world is but a play:
Those who say don't know and those who know don't say.

Where is the man who in his heart can really feel it?
Can he feel it in his heart, and then can he reveal it?
Then let him sit and sing, and sail the flowing river.
Snakes and arrows cannot go where sound remains forever.

Chorus

How can a man accept life who does not accept dying?
How can a man achieve his purpose without ever trying?
How can a man have courage who cannot as well be tender?
He who wins is he who is learning to surrender.

Chorus

Where is the man who in his heart can really feel it?
Can he feel it in his heart, and then can he reveal it?
Let him sit and sing, and let his heart be gladder,
Chant to God until the masquerade no longer matters.

Last Chorus:
last line: God will not forget the one who sings his name.

The note to Jody Stecher's old Bay Records LP 'Snake Baked a Hoecake' gives the following: 'Leela Leela copyright 1974 Tantra Research Institute. The English words to this Nepalese fiddle tune were composed by Billy Schwartz, an Italian Jew with a German name from Holland, Michigan, who plays Indian music on the Hawaiian guitar'.

Billy Schwartz played electric steel guitar and whistle on the track.

Jody Stecher also commented that he feels personally responsible for having increased the world population of Leelas, as he has met a number of young women whose parents named them after falling in love with the song...

Yes, Lamarca. I did not look at the note to the CD reissue. He also says in the CD note that 'Leela is a name, but in this song it's a Sanskrit-derived word for "game"'. The copyright in the CD reissue also differs and 'Billy' has become 'Willy': Willy Schwartz Vegetiboy Music BMI.

Barbara, thanks for posting the lyrics.

Stewie, thanks for the additional information. I had wondered if Leela was a name or had some other meaning.

This is a great song!
