Subject: Alternative mandola cases From: GUEST,Les/ Manchester uk Date: 08 Sep 01 - 03:41 AM Ok, I tried this last week but think it's worth another go. I have a flat back mandola (30" x 12" x 4". cases are rare or expensive. I need a hard case so that I can fall over with it and not damage its contents. Any original ideas? It's tennis racket shaped but I cany find a hard tennis racket case. Could a kipper box or a fishing tackle box or something in B&Q be converted? |

Subject: RE: Alternative mandola cases From: GUEST Date: 09 Sep 01 - 03:11 AM This time I'll write it before I try to put my name in. I once made an autoharp case primarily out of plywood and old carpeting. It still holds together. Mike Seeger has (had?) a coffin shaped banjo case made out of the same material. Also, you might give eBay a try: there's usually a variety of instrument cases for sale, even new--at pretty low prices. Of course you could plan on not falling down...I have gig bags for both my mandolin and mandola, and a banjo. --seed |

Subject: RE: Alternative mandola cases From: Willie-O Date: 09 Sep 01 - 10:25 AM Any competent woodworker can put together a case, given the opportunity to measure the instrument and check the fit as it goes along. I made a double case for my mandola and mandolin, they face in opposite directions and the result is only about 20% larger than a square case that will hold the mandolin only. For sturdiness, you'd prob want 3/8 ply, or what I did was 1/4' ply with 1/8 lauan--leftover, no rainforests were killed special for me. Willie-O |

Subject: RE: Alternative mandola cases From: Rex Date: 09 Sep 01 - 02:05 PM Well, just a quick fix would be to find one of the cheap, cardboard, tenor banjo cases. I got a used one for $15 at a music store and use it to hold my rather small octave mandolin. You need to find the cardboard cases because the jug eared tuners stick out too far from the peghead compaired to tenor banjo tuners. The softer sides will bend to fit. It works for me anyhow. Rex |
