Subject: Newbie here, lookin' for lyrics...
From: WildWilliam
Date: 15 Sep 01 - 08:43 PM

Hi! I here in the Deeeeeeeeep South looking for the lyrics to a song my mother sang to us kids many years ago. (We all sang a lot as we traveled...a LOT.)

Excuse the spelling but it went something like this:

Once there was a Dutchman. His name was Johnny Von Beck.
He made the finest sausages and sauerkraut, I 'spect. (Not real sure about that line)
He made the finest sausages that ever could be seen.
'Til one day he invented the wonderful sausage machine.

(CHORUS) Oh, Mr. Johnny Von Beck, how could you be so mean?
I told you you'd be sorry for inventing that machine.
Now all the neighbors' cats and dogs will never more be seen,
For they'll be ground to sausages in Johnny Von Beck's machine.

There are other verses, each followed by the chorus. I know it's a bit gruesome but it was one of many jolly songs we all enjoyed. Others I'd love to have complete lyrics for include, "Ain't We Crazy" and "Hut Sut Ralston on the Rillarah" (and I don't know if that's right.)

Thanks!

HTML line breaks added. --JoeClone, 19-Feb-02.

I think one or two of the other versions got submitted, George - but some were too close to what we already have. We don't include every version of every song that people post. If you're looking for a variety of versions of songs, it's best to search both the Digitrad and the Forum.

Welcome WildWilliam
I once wrote a sausage song for a competition set by the Sausage Marketing Association of UK
one of the songs I heard had a chorus "Say it with a sausage tonight" - a hoot which deserved to win - a rap artist won and was immediately never heard of again

One day the old machine broke and wouldn't start to go
So Johnny Von Beck he crawled inside to see what made it so
His wife she had a nightmare, came walking in her sleep,
She gave the crack a heck of a yank
and Johnny Van Beck was meat. Woop bang!

I think this is the 2nd verse:

One Day a little fat boy came walking in the store.
He bought a pound of sausages and laid 'em on the floor.
He started in a whistlin' and whistlin' a tune
and all the little sausages went dancin' 'roung the room woop bang!

As my father sang it 55 years ago:

There was a little dutchman
his name was Johnny Beck
He made sausages with sauerkraut and respect.
One day he got to inventing and invented a machine
It had a carborator and it ran on gasoline.

Oh Mister Johnny Beck how could you be so mean
for all the neighbors cats and dogs shall never more be seen
for they'll be ground to suasages in Johnny Beck's machine.

One day the darn thing busted and the dang thing wouldn't go
So Johny Beck crawled inside to see what made it so.
His wife was having a nightmare and walking in her sleep.
She gave the crank a deuce of a yank and Johnny Beck was meat.

Oh Mister ...

Once there was a Dutchman. His name was Johnny Trebeck.
He made the finest sausages and sourkrat, i suspect.
He made the finest sausages, that ever could be seen.
'Til one day he invented the wonderful sausage machine.

Oh, Mr. Johnny Trebeck, how could you be so mean?
I told you you'd be sorry, for inventing that machine.
Now all the neighbors' cats and dogs will never more be seen,
They'll be ground to sausages in Johnny Trebeck's machine.

One Day a little fat boy, came walking in the store.
He bought a pound of sausages, and laid 'em on the floor.
He started in a whistlin' and whistlin' a tune,
And all the little sausages, went dancin' 'round the room.

Oh, Mr. Johnny Trebeck, how could you be so mean?
I told you you'd be sorry, for inventing that machine.
Now all the neighbors' cats and dogs will never more be seen,
They'll be ground to sausages in Johnny Trebeck's machine.

As may have been said on another thread, I don't think Dunderbeck / Johnny Verbeck was referred to as "Johnny Trebeck" until the game show host Alex Trebek (Jeopardy) came to fame.

He made the finest sausages and sauerkraut and schpeck!
Schpeck is little fatty pieces of ham or bacon used to flavor soups and sauces.

This is how we learned it growing up...
Chorus:
Oh mr and mrs Johnery Beck, how could you be so mean, I told you you'd be sorry for inventin that machine. Now all the neighbors cats and dogs will never more be seen, they'll all be ground to sausages in Johnery Becks machine.

One day a little fat boy came walking in the store, he bought a pound of sausages and laid them on the floor. The boy began to whistle he whistled up a tune, and all the little sausages came dancin around the room.

One day the old thing busted, the ole thing wouldnt go. So Johnery Beck stuck in his neck to see what made it so. His wife was having a nightmare walking in her sleep. She gave the thing a heck of a yank and Johnery Beck was meat.

Interesting to see so many "versions".

The last one to write above this comment phonetically remembers the song, but the name is Johnny Rübeck and yes the word is "speck" (pronounced as Tekbird writes above: schpeck--which always goes with sauerkraut and sausage ;-)

And Johnny was definitely a Dutchman--not a boy.
And the boy who came into the store, well, I guess he could be fat--if it helps with the poetic scansion. Here I don't think it matters much--but for a camp song, it might be kinder to just let him be a "normal" boy.

One day a boy came walking.
He walked into the store
He bought a pack of sausages
And placed them on the floor,
Then he began to whistle
He whistled up a tune,
And all the little sausages,
They danced around the room.

Cheers!

Away out in the forest
There lived a mean old man
His name was Mr. Johnny Rebeck
And he could surely plan
All the neighbors' cats and dogs
Were always at his feet
So he invented a machine
That turned them all to meat

Hey Mr. Johnny Rebeck,
How could you be so mean
We told you you'd be sorry
For inventing that machine
All the neighbors' cats and dogs
Will never more be seen
They've all been ground to sausages
In Johnny Rebeck's machine

One day a boy came walking,
He walked into the store
He bought a pack of sausages
And placed them on the floor
Then he began to whistle,
He whistled up a tune
And all the little sausages,
They danced around the room

Hey Mr. Johnny Rebeck,
How could you be so mean
We told you you'd be sorry
For inventing that machine
All the neighbors' cats and dogs
Will never more be seen
They've all been ground to sausages
In Johnny Rebeck's machine

One day the darn thing busted,
The darn thing wouldn't go
So Johnny Rebeck climbed inside
To see what made it so
His wife she had a nightmare
While walking in her sleep
She gave the crank a great big yank
And Johnny Rebeck was meat

Hey Mr. Johnny Rebeck,
How could you be so mean
We told you you'd be sorry
For inventing that machine
All the neighbors' cats and dogs
Will never more be seen
They've all been ground to sausages
In Johnny Rebeck's machine

Gee, in Wisconsin, we never thought that Johnny Verbeck was a "mean old man." He was just a victim of circumstances...

I have just been reading about South African history and have learned that Jan Van Riebeeck was an ethnically Dutch official who is considered the father of Afrikaner South Africa, founding the Dutch Cape Colony in 1652. His image was on South African currency until the end of the apartheid era, and the anniversary of his founding the nation was celebrated for hundreds of years. Just a coincidence of similarity with the song character of Johnny Rebeck / Verbeck? Maybe, but maybe not.

My grandfather learned this song while he was a POW during WW II!

There was a jolly Dutchman his name was Johnny Rebek;
He made the finest sausages and sauerkraut by heck;
He made the finest sausages that evermore be seen;
Until one day he invented the most wonderful sausage machine;

Chorus:
Oh...Mr. Johnny Rebek,

How could you be so mean? I told you you'd be sorry for inventing that machine. Now all the neighbors, cats and dogs will never more be seen because they're all ground in sausages in Johnny Rebek's machine!!!

One day a boy went walking and walked right in a store;
He ordered a pound of sausages and laid them on the floor;
The boy started to whistle and whistled up a tune;
And all those little sausages started dancing around the room;

Chorus:
Oh...Mr. Johnny Rebek,

How could you be so mean? I told you you'd be sorry for inventing that machine. Now all the neighbors, cats and dogs will never more be seen because they're all ground in sausages in Johnny Rebek's machine!!!

One day the machine got broken, the darn thing wouldn't go;
So Johnny Rebek climbed inside, to see what made it so;
His wife was having a nightmare, walking in her sleep;
She gave the crank one hell of a yank and Johnny Rebek was meat;

Chorus:
Oh...Mr. Johnny Rebek,

How could you be so mean? I told you you'd be sorry for inventing that machine. Now all the neighbors, cats and dogs will never more be seen because they're all ground in sausages in Johnny Rebek's machine!!!

And then of course there is this

SKIPPER YAN REBECK.

Who's the king of the fighting Dutch,
SKIPPER YAN REBECK
And who do the sailors fear so much,
SKIPPER YAN REBECK

AND IT'S YA YA LEAVE YOUR HAMMOCKS,
YA YA HANDS ON DECK, YA YA BREAK YOUR BACK
FOR SKIPPER YAN REBECK.

When he got a boat of his own,
SKIPPER YAN REBECK
It was brute force kept him on the throne,
SKIPPER YAN REBECK
CH.

And who brought all the tea from China,
SKIPPER YAN REBECK
And sold it all in the Carolina,
SKIPPER YAN REBECK
CH.

And who can drink his weight in beer,
SKIPPER YAN REBECK
and only takes two baths a year,
SKIPPER YAN REBECK
CH.

Who can furl the main topsail,
SKIPPER YAN REBECK
all on his own in a living gale.
SKIPPER YAN REBECK
CH.

Who sleeps with four girls every night,
SKIPPER YAN REBECK
one red, one yellow, one pink, one white,
SKIPPER YAN REBECK
CH.

Who's the king of the fighting Dutch,
SKIPPER YAN REBECK
And who do the sailors fear so much,
SKIPPER YAN REBECK
