Subject: Old Folk album From: GUEST,lah1957 Date: 16 Oct 01 - 06:35 PM I'm trying to find information re: an old LP I listened to as a child. It was a single male guitarist/vocalist, probably recorded in the early - mid sixties, as far as I know. I cannot remember the artist's name, but I seem to remember something in the liner notes about his being new, with fresh interpretatons of these old songs. The titles I remember from the album were:
The Erie Canal I think there were more songs, but cannot recall them. I still had the album when MY son was small (18 years ago) and used to play for him, but now can't find it. I know this is pitifully little information to go on, but if anyone might know anything about this, it would sure be appreciated. Thanks! LeeAnne |

Subject: RE: Help: Old Folk album From: Tiger Date: 16 Oct 01 - 07:03 PM It sounds like a Burl Ives album, but he was hardly NEW in the 60s. |

Subject: RE: Help: Old Folk album From: katlaughing Date: 16 Oct 01 - 07:18 PM I agree, Tiger, that's who came to mind, but not new, as you say. |

Subject: RE: Help: Old Folk album From: SINSULL Date: 16 Oct 01 - 07:21 PM LeeAnne - I am certain it is Burl Ives. His LPs are always available on Ebay. Or you can get CD collections with some of these songs. Good luck. Check the DT above for lyrics. |

Subject: RE: Help: Old Folk album From: GUEST,Fortunato Date: 16 Oct 01 - 07:24 PM It really can't be anyone else. unless I'm mistaken, Burl Ives was the only one hokey enough to record, "I swallowed a fly". Even Pete Seeger wouldn't do that. Would he? |

Subject: RE: Help: Old Folk album From: Jim Dixon Date: 16 Oct 01 - 08:01 PM I agree that it sounds like Burl Ives. I can't find any one CD that has all the songs you mention, though. It may be out of print. But look at this web page for Burl Ives' Greatest Hits. It has some RealAudio clips you can play to see if you recognize the voice. Then you can look at this page to see some other albums of his. I don't necessarily recommend that site as a good place to buy from, however. But if you click on the "Help Support the Mudcat" box, you may find a way to buy an album so that Mudcat gets a commission. By the way, does your son still like folk music? |

Subject: RE: Help: Old Folk album From: Art Thieme Date: 16 Oct 01 - 08:04 PM This could easily be one of Pete Seeger's LPs for Folkways that were part of a series (2 or 3) of those called Americas Favorite Ballads. They might still be available from Smithsonian Folkways. The "Old Lady That Swallowed A Fly", written by Canadian, Allan Mills, was on one ot those I'm pretty sure. "Big Rock Candy Mountain" was by Harry "Hawire Mac" McClintock but was almost Burl Ives theme song---along with "Blue Tail Fly". Hope this helps. Art Thieme |

Subject: RE: Help: Old Folk album From: RoyH (Burl) Date: 17 Oct 01 - 09:56 AM My submission is that it is not Burl Ives, unless the song list has an error. I've never heard Burl Ives sing 'Goodnight Irene'. I've heard him sing all the others though. Art's suggestion sounds quite feasible to me. |

Subject: RE: Help: Old Folk album From: DougR Date: 17 Oct 01 - 02:49 PM Burl, I have many Burl Ives recordings and you're right. I've never heard him sing that song either and it's not on any of my LPs or CDs. I'd go with Art too. DougR |

Subject: RE: Help: Old Folk album From: Kaleea Date: 17 Oct 01 - 10:27 PM Burl Ives came to my mind immediately, also. Didn't Peter Paul & Mary record "I Swallowed a Fly", or am I just having another gray moment? |

Subject: RE: Help: Old Folk album From: GUEST,LeeAnne Date: 14 Nov 01 - 01:15 PM Thanks, all. I have checked the Pete Seeger, but that wasn't it. It did jar my memory of a few more songs that were on the album, however: Foggy Dew and Old Dan Tucker. I will check the Burl Ives links. PS: Jim, no my son who will be 18 in 2 weeks now likes, and I hate to say it, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Mettalica, oh, I can't go on. Bleh.......... :-) |

Subject: RE: Help: Old Folk album From: DougR Date: 14 Nov 01 - 01:27 PM Lee Anne: Let us know if you find the album and who the artist is, will you please? Burl Ives has such a distinctive voice, I'd be surprised if you didn't recognize his voice as the lone vocalist (if it's him of course) when you listen to the tunes on the website. DougR |

Subject: RE: Help: Old Folk album From: GUEST,LeeAnne Date: 01 Jan 02 - 10:42 PM I still haven't been able to find any album by anyone with all the songs I know were on the album. I did listen to the tunes on the Burl Ives website, but it was not the same voice and the versions and phrasing of the songs was different. I'll just have to keep looking! Thanks for all your assistance....... |

Subject: RE: Help: Old Folk album From: Rolfyboy6 Date: 01 Jan 02 - 11:10 PM I think these are some Cisco Houston vinyl album tunes that have never been re-released on CD. I have some on a weird three LP set called "Folksong and Minstrelsy" that came out in the early 60s. They mostly seem to be stuff from Vanguard Records. All that's available now are various "Best of ..." compilations. The combination of tunes rings bells in the attics of my memory. If the singer has a great manly baritone it's probably Cisco. |
