Subject: Alexandria Chantey Sing From: Wotcha Date: 18 Nov 01 - 04:44 PM Apparently the chantey sing at Cate's Bistro is no more ... so in an attempt to keep chanteys alive on this side of the Potomac, please come down to Tiffany's Tavern, 1116 King Street, at 7:30pm on Tuesday night before the Open Mic starts. The Open Mic starts at 8:30pm, so we'll warm things up then "infiltrate" our way on stage ... If we get thrown out then it's a pub crawl. See you there. Cheers, Brian |

Subject: RE: Alexandria Chantey Sing From: Wotcha Date: 19 Nov 01 - 09:51 PM Well, I intend to try and do some other evenings but this is an experiment. Most of the contributors to the sings are busy reenacting with the Ships Company or other groups on weekends ... Cheers, Brian |

Subject: RE: Alexandria Chantey Sing From: Wotcha Date: 20 Nov 01 - 10:56 PM Well, just back from the "subrosa" chantey sing in Alexandria. Only 4 of us actually showed up, and 2 of us in 1800s era sailor gear ... the audience were good sports as we took turns, did 3 songs and with the "planted" choruses got everyone else to join in. It helped to hand out cheat sheets so the patrons could feel a part of it. Not sure what direction this is going to go but it was a nice break. Hope to see some Catters at the next one! Stay tuned. Cheers, Brian |

Subject: RE: Alexandria Chantey Sing From: Wincing Devil Date: 21 Nov 01 - 12:51 PM Thanks for setting that up Brian! Good venue, I was afraid I'd be out of place in Old Town dressed in petticoat slops and big buckle shoes. Nary a nod! You mentioned that Thursday nite would be better. Maybe you should float that idea at the Royal Mile, Tuesday after next. Funny thing happened on the way home. I stopped by the store to pick up some things my wife had asked me to get, and I forgot I was in rig. Old Town folks wouldn't notice it, but the Kensington folks gave me some stares. (I "AARRGGHH!'d" at 'em)

Subject: RE: Alexandria Chantey Sing From: Peter Kasin Date: 21 Nov 01 - 11:08 PM Sounds like a start! One thing you might want to consider, if there are people coming who are new to sea music, is to tape the next session (the singers agree to it) and then offer to copy the tape for anyone who wants to give you a blank cassette, so they can learn songs by ear and have some inspiration to get involved. It could be part of building a loyal following and of bridging the gap between singers and listeners - of bringing listeners into the fold of singers. One thing I did at a chantey sing here in S.F. was to bring my shower curtain from home and announce that if anyone considered themselves "shower singers" they were welcome to go behind the curtain and sing a song, just to ease the transition from shower to public singing! It was goofy, fun, and it got a taker. Unasked for advice here, but it's exciting to read of a new chantey sing germinating, so I can't help throwing my two-cents in. Best, chanteyranger |
