You might like to look at this file in the Digital Tradition database:  BHEIR ME O  (also commonly known as the Eriskay Love Lilt).

There is further discussion and some variant forms in this earlier thread in the Forum:  bheir me o - meaning

Dear Alison,

If you enter the word bheir in the Digitrad and Forum Search box and hit 'Go', you'll find several threads about this song, which not only will have the lyrics you're looking for, but discussions on the song as well.

All the best, Áine

Hi Alison, it's called 'Bheir mi o' or 'The Eriskay Love Lilt', there's an English version on the Digitrad here but I can't find the Gaelic yet, I'll keep trying, maybe someone else can help...

As well as the links here on the Mudcat, you could also use the excellent internet search engine, Google. If you go there and enter the phrase bheir me o OR bheir mi o (with quotation marks at the beginning and the end of the phrase), you'll get pages of hits with lyrics on this song.

Thank you so much!!! You guys are good!

Alison Urquhart

Have any of you learned scots gaelic? My son and I are going to learn. Any suggestions on how you started? We are a musically inclined family, so I thought music would help.

Happy Thanksgiving ya'll!

Alison, BTW, the link to the thread posted above will have a link taking you to one of my Gaelic song pages. This one has the song you are looking for.

Note, the older tune is what I sing it to, not the one commonly known as the Eriskay Love Lilt in English.

I unfortunately have no easy way of imparting the tune to you, BUT, I would recommend two artists who sing it in the older fashion

Arthur Cormack

Ishbel MacAskill

Note, Ishbel sings a few verses that Arthur does not. Arthur ends with the wishful thought that they might yet be married at some point in time. The guy is really smitten. Ishbel sings from the point of view that well, yes, love is fine, but tragedy wins out in the end!

I've had this argument with her over this for years. I don't think either of us will convince the other.

I had the priviledge of hearing Arthur Cormack sing this at a house party after a concert back last month. I was sitting about 3 feet from him. What an awesome voice.

CHORDS for you

       G
Vair me o, ro van o
                  D7
Vair me o ro ven ee,

Vair me o ru o ho
                   G
Sad I am without thee.

When I'm lonely, dear white heart,
Black the night and wild the sea;
by love's light my foot finds
The old pathway to thee.

Thou'rt the music of my heart,
Harp of joy, o cuit mo chridh,
Moon of guidance by night,
Strength and light thou'rt to me.
