Hello all,

I don't get a lot of time to drop by, but over last couple of days came up with these two questions.
Lyrics for
1) Seven deadly sins.. at least I think that's the name.. Chorus goes something like "If it wasn't legal then the lawyers they would sue, and the jails would be full of folks who had a drink or two, and if they didn't like it, then away the girls would run..." Dubliners maybe??

2. Another one that I've heard only once or twice. Chorus is : "I wish I had someone to love me, someone to call me their own, .............. I'm tired of being alone" Not sure of the band but might be Sons of Erin out of St. John's, NF.

Lastly, a translation of a phrase I've seen in lyrics from the Clancy Brothers "bhainne na mo is an gowna".
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Phonetically, I'd guess at: 'Cow's milk and the blacksmith' - but it sounds too surreal - someone with better Irish than me'll come along soon, I'm sure....

(1) Seven deadly sins
The Dubliners definitely have sung it.

If (2) is the song linked to by Wolfgang, it's also in the DT (CLICK HERE).

Guest Gord, your last query on that Clancys lyric has often bothered me too. I don't have a copy of the lyrics at the moment but if my memory is good the refrain went: "Singing 'bainne na mbó is na gamhna', and the juice of the barley for me". That would translate:'milk of the cow and the calves', and the juice etc, etc. But does that mean he likes milk AND whiskey or is he saying: milk of the cow FOR the calves and whiskey for me? If its the latter it should read 'bainne na mbó DOS na gamhna'. NOW SEE WHAT YOU"VE STARTED! I'll bet Áine or Brian will clear this up.

'bainne na mbó is na gamhna' = the milk of the cows and the young heifers -- 'gamhna' can mean young bull cows or young heifers.

Taking the line in the context of the song, I'd say that the fella is saying, with a wink and a nod, that he enjoys mature women as well as the young ones, along with a good drink of whiskey. That's my take on it, anyway.

All the best, Áine

i think its been sung by the macalmans. in fact i know its been sung by the macalmans coz i have the tape somewhere. i cant remember the words or anything but does then chorus not go something like, i wish i had someone to love me, someone to call me their own, someone to sleep with me nightly(i think) im tired of being alone. its a beautiful song anyway. i'll dig out the cassette and see if there is any other information on it.

I've got a record of it by the Dubliners - cheap label called With the Dubliners - it's in the loft and I've drunk too deeply of life's bitter cup to attempt the ladder ...

'Prisoner's Song' was sung by the late Derek Moffat of The McCalmans on 'Listen to the Heat' (1988). Their lyrics seem to be somewhat different from the two versions behind the blickies above, but I'll check the album before I post them.

Thanks for the help on the translation.. Just found a CD with the song and linernotes for the song "The Juice of the Barley". Liam Clancy translates 'bainne na mo is an gamna' as 'the milk of the cow is alright for the calf' but the juice of the barley for me. i.e. to each his own. Could the different spellings be due to regional dialects??

Tks.
