Subject: Tech: Quicktime has taken over MIDI file

Hello,

I've just had to install Quicktime 5 on my PC (Windows 98) to view a particular file.

On the install I was quite careful not to make it the default player for any other formats than the proprietary Apple ones.

However, it appears to have made itself the default for midi files when I click on a web link (files on my hard disk are still played by Windows Media Player)

Looking at 'File Types' in My Computer / View / Options / File Types, MIDI is set for Windows Media Player.

I can't find any options either within IE5 or Quicktime to revert web midi to Windows Media Player.

Hope this makes sense, I'm probably missing something really obvious.

Thanks for your time.

Paul

Open Quicktime, then go to Edit-Preferences-Quick Time Preferences-Browser Plugin-MIME Settings. Click on the + sign next to Audio; uncheck the MIDI box.

Malcolm,
Will this also return jpegs to their normal format? I noticed this program took over that part also.

Thanks for this info!!

Steve

You want the "File Type Associations" menu for that; it's in the same list as "Browser Plugin".

OK, here's a related question. From this wonderful old-time fiddle tunes site, I downloaded a neat program called vanBasco's Karaoke Player. Only problem is, the little devil insists on jumping up and playing every MIDI file that comes its way. I looked in "Multimedia" on the Window$ control panel, and don't see anything about setting preferences for MIDI players. Is there a way I can use the karaoke player just for the tunes on that website (where it's handy for changing tempos and keys) without having it take over my system? Thanks!

Aloha,
Mark

You can change the application that is the default for any file type you choose. For example, to assign a default application for MIDI files:

  1. Right-click on your “My Computer” icon.
  2. Select “Explore” from the context menu. The Folder dialog will pop up.
  3. Click on the tab labeled “File Types.”
  4. Scroll down and select (click once) the type labeled “MIDI Sequence.”
  5. Click on the Edit button. The “Edit File Type” dialog will pop up.
  6. Select the word “Play” in the list box.
  7. Click the Edit button. The “Edit action” dialog will pop up.
  8. Click the “Browse” button to select the application you would like as the default for MIDI.
  9. Click OK, Close, Close. You have now set the default application for files of type .mid.
