The Glasgow Folk Foundation has received a considerable sum of money.

We would like to give some of it to Mudcat for it's good work.

However, we are somewhat concerned that some people post as 'GUESTS' That is very bad.

We like the fact that 50% of posters have no knowledge of folk music, and like to laugh at jokes about farting.

We enjoy the fact that the majority of the posts on the forum are simply chit-chat between friends

What we do not like is the fact that some people are prepared to offer lyrics and interesting information about songs, without logging in.

In conclusion, as long as you accept GUESTS, we are unable to provide you with any funding

I understand the Drumcree Megasession was t'rown oot by Mudcat Management, as well it should be. Sure, the fenian bastards are giving our good Mudcat and the cause of folk music a bad name, so they are.

Where does that leave those of us who do have some knowledge of folk music, and like to laugh at jokes about farting?

Peter.

If you aren't going to give the money to Mudcat, then why did you even bring it up?

For those who "don't get it" in re this thread, not to worry. It's a farce and a fraud. Save your time and let it die a prompt death.

Yes, we want those who aim their arrows of outrageous parody at Max and Mudcat to cease and desist immediately. We mustn't spoil our fantasy life here. Max and Mudcat are good. Guests are bad. Please send Max money for his new fence.

Which label, Rich?

I've seen rudeness from both GUESTS and members.

Can you clarify?

Thanks

I never said I wasn't rude. I am quite a gentleman, until you piss me off with your childish behaviour and your lack of manners. For those of you who have shit on Max in the manner you have, just be glad that Max has provided such a forum for you to act like assholes. If this was a pub and I was the bouncer, I would not even bounce some of you jerks.... I'd let the crowd stone you.

I have never been in favour of banning guests until this last post.I HAVE CHANGED MY MIND. How can any thinking person say such a thing.? I REFER YOU TO THE OPEN LETTER FROM MAX TO GUESTS. You must be a very sad and BITTER person. I hope you find the courage to to say SORRY at least to MAX. Jup.

Gnu, I don't think the definition of a gentleman includes flaming people who piss you off. Quite the contrary, I believe a gentleman would do about the opposite, wouldn't he?

Jup,

Your first post here was a little over a month ago.

Kinda a wise guy, aren't you?

Just to clarify (for anyone who thinks Jup is upset by Gnu's comment): The post to which Jup refers in his/her post of 11-Feb-02 - 03:52 PM was a personal attack by a GUEST that followed Gnu's post of 11-Feb-02 - 03:23 PM. GUEST later apologized (sort of). Both posts by GUEST were deleted by one of the Joe-clones.

This place is going badly downhill...

I invite you all to have a look at my two posts in the Open Letter from GUESTS to Max thread. I have copied and pasted some information on ethical and unethical, and successful and unsuccessful moderating of website message boards like this.

It might be helpful for people to read it, and share their feelings and views about the suggestions. Also, see my links provided in The New Mudcat Order thread, which I also gave in hopes of bringing people together to work on solutions for the good of all who come to Mudcat.

To "GUEST,No One Wins a Flame War": You claim that you hope to bring people together here, yet you won't join the people who are members here. You post a description of the "job" of a moderator, but you don't volunteer your time to help anyone do that unpaid job because you'd rather sit on the sidelines and advise other people to change things to please you. My "feeling" and my "view" is that that sort of behavior is not "helpful".

SharonA,

I'm sorry you find my suggestions are not helpful. Do you have some positive suggestions to share that could help us get beyond the flame war era here at Mudcat?

I'd be happy to hear them and discuss them with you.

"GUEST, No One Wins Flame War": Yes, I have one suggestion (since I'm sure you would not take the suggestion to become a member if it were offered to you): Go to the thread entitled "An Open Letter from Max to GUESTS" and read the letter from Max – the publisher and administrator of this Forum and this website – and comply with his request to stop the flaming behavior. That will get us beyond the "flame war era".

If we don't do what he asks, we will have to do what he orders. In fact, that paraphrases one of the statements in the list of suggestions you posted: "...troublemakers need to be handled – either by gentle persuasion or more harsh measures if necessary." Over time, Max has asked nicely, cajoled, scolded, prodded and pleaded with people to act in a kindly manner when posting, and now he's given us fair warning that he is prepared to do something more drastic unless people comply with his request. Sounds like he fits your definition of a good moderator.
