FREDERICTON (CNB) - The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) invites public comment on the draft environmental assessment guidelines (scope document) for the proposed modifications and construction of new structures at the Solid Radioactive Waste Management Facility (SRWMF) in Point Lepreau, New Brunswick.

Because this project requires registration under the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulation of the New Brunswick Clean Environment Act, the federal and provincial environmental assessment processes are being carried out in a harmonized and co-operative manner.

The public comment period on the draft guidelines closes on March 8, 2002.

For information about this environmental assessment project, please see the Project Description. Copies of the draft environmental assessment guidelines and further information on the project are available at the following locations:

The purpose of the environmental assessment is to identify the possible environmental effects of the modification and construction of new structures at the Point Lepreau SRWMF, and to determine whether these effects can be mitigated before the project is allowed to proceed.

Staff from CNSC and the New Brunswick Department of the Environment and Local Government will review all comments prior to the environmental assessment guidelines being finalized and submitted by CNSC staff to the Commission for approval. All comments received regarding the guidelines are public information.

For more information on the environmental assessment process, please refer to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency Web site at www.ceaa-acee.gc.ca.

What is the range of "new storage structures" they are considering and what level radioactive waste are they proposing be stored there? As members of Safe Power for Maine, I and my wife have played a long time role in critiquing the various plans Maine Yankee Atomic Power has proposed for such storage over the years, and is proposing now during its decomissioning (CHEERS!!!!)

Beats me. I've been working day and night at my small business for the past six years and haven't kept up with any of it, except to read that the plant had to shut down again and again due to glitches and component failures. Heck, my old beat up Chevy got more mileage than that plant. Just thought that our neighbours may be interested. I hope you pass this along to your group for their/your consideration... I figure you have every right to be a part of it.

I've often thought that it might be a wise move to move the population of Afghanistan (all 6 million or so) to South Dakota (giving each one ten thousand bucks or so) and use Afghanistan as a nuclear waste dump.

Cheaper (and more useful) than what's happening now.
