Subject: RE: Diamond Joe. Ramblin Jack Elliot. Tabs From: Cluin Date: 27 Mar 03 - 09:46 PM I was gonna start a new thread to ask this question, but I found this old one related to it. My question? Anyone know what exactly is the "diamond studded jaw" referred to in the old cowboy song, Diamond Joe? The song says that's where DJ kept all his money, but what is it? |

Tabs From: Padre Date: 27 Mar 03 - 11:17 PM Cluin, 'diamond studded jaw' probably means he had diamonds inset in his teeth as a way of carrying his wealth. I once served with a gunnery sergeant who had two teeth (upper incisors) each of which had a small diamond set into it. The standard joke in the battalion was that he couldn't go on night patrol for fear he'd be seen if he smiled. Padre |

Subject: RE: Diamond Joe. Ramblin Jack Elliot. Tabs From: Coyote Breath Date: 28 Mar 03 - 07:59 AM I've been playing this song for years and got the reference to wealth and teeth OK, but always wondered if there was a "Diamond Joe" in real life. As far as I know that song is the only one that makes a reference to carrying one's wealth in one's mouth. The rest of the song is a more or less "working man's lament". except for the reference to a boss that wouldn't shut up, especially about himself. I really like the song. I'm putting together a collecton of "cowboy music" I'd like to perform up at Yellowstone this season. Just around campfires once or twice a week, it's not a "gig". We'll be up at Canyon campground working as attendents. If any of you are up that way this summer, stop by. The Van's license plate is COYOTL (Missouri). CB |

Subject: RE: Diamond Joe. Ramblin Jack Elliot. Tabs From: Cluin Date: 28 Mar 03 - 09:22 PM Really? That meaning had occurred to me, but I wondered if maybe there was some other meaning or colloquialism it referred to, like a wallet or strongbox or something. Interesting. Thanks! I, too, love this song. It's a great one to sing (but I do it more in the style of Willie P. Bennett's adaptation of it). And my favourite version (next to my own) is Ramblin' Jack's. RJE does another great version of another great song, "Me and Billy the Kid". I like the Pat Green original a lot, but Mr. Elliot performs it in a more storyteller fashion that does more for the lyric, IMHO. Having Peter Rowan backing him up on it don't hurt none, neither... |

Tabs From: GUEST,Folky Heart Date: 05 Mar 04 - 05:42 AM Yes I know this song fairly well, it's been awhile since I heard this version & I have no tabbing materials but I can tell you the chords & notes. Here it goes all the notes are played on the low E string it starts of in G.....3.2.0.Em....000.222.3.G...Cadd9..G.....3.2.0.Em....000.222.3.G...Cadd9..G ect. Thats most of the song from what I remember(there is a part in the middle where it gets quiet & he is palm muting the chords he's playing) and it's pretty similar to what he's playing. G 320033 Em 022000 Cadd9 x32033 |

Subject: RE: Diamond Joe. Ramblin Jack Elliot. Tabs From: GUEST,Folky Heart Date: 05 Mar 04 - 05:48 AM I think it's a diamond studded "jar" that diamond joe keeps all of his money in.Oh yeah I left out the intro on the low E 0.2.3 then strum G. |

Subject: RE: Diamond Joe. Ramblin Jack Elliot. Tabs From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 05 Mar 04 - 07:01 AM No, definitely a diamond studded JAW a la Jelly Roll Morton and no doubt several other jazz musicians around the early part of the 20th Century. Unless of course you can explain what a diamond studed jar is/was. |

Subject: RE: Diamond Joe. Ramblin Jack Elliot. Tabs From: GUEST,James K [jimnbob@onetel.com] Date: 15 Mar 05 - 12:41 PM I had this on an old LP [HMV or Columbia I think]called "Jack Elliot in London" but it got borrowed years ago. I still sing it sometimes. As I remember the first verse went:- There's a guy that you will hear about, most every place you go, And his holdings are in Texas and his name is Diamond Joe. He carries all his money in a diamond-studded jar. And he never was much bothered by the process of the law. That is a great last line!! |

Subject: RE: Diamond Joe. Ramblin Jack Elliot. Tabs From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 15 Mar 05 - 01:24 PM Not only the rhyme of "jaw" and "law" in that verse argue for the "jaw" reading, but think about the "not much bothered by the process of the law" line. And then later in some versions of the song the reference to "the bankrupt law". Now, if his riches are in his mouth, they're part of him, not available for creditors to seize, so the law in that respect doesn't bother him. Whereas if his money is in a physical form kept in a jar (diamond studded or not) he's got to watch out for his creditors, because by order of the court that can be taken from him. Dave Oesterreich |
