Anyone got the lyrics to July Wakes. As far as I can remember it is a poem by the Lancashire Poet Sam Laycock. Cheer

I know the song you mean, although not the words! If you can get hold of a copy of Mike Harding's 'A Lancashire Lad' LP you'll find it there. His singing is very clear so you'll have no problem.

July Wakes Looms are swept and brass is drawn
Me and Jack'll be off at dawn
O we're off to beg or steal or pawn
For July Wakes

We've sweat for one and fifty weeks
And human limbs like looms will creak
And we'll go and climb up Pendle Cheek
And rest us limbs

We'll roam in t'woods and we'll stroll(roll) in t'hay
Watch grey clouds swing up at play And we'll taste clean rain

We'll foller t'rivers up to'd sky
And watch great fishes swimming by
And we'll sup from brooks when we get dry
And we'll stand up men

We've care free day's til Jack's downcast
Watching Larks and Linnets racing past
Hear the hooter's moan through Linnets blast
'te hell with looms

cos Monday'll see us back in shed
watching shuttle's spewing out miles and miles of thread
wee'll be weaving fifty one miles of thread
and one of life

With compliments

Gerry

I posted Richard Pomfret's text, taken from Mike Harding's book, in this previous thread:  July Wakes

The same text was copy-and-pasted into a later discussion:  The July Wakes

Both are very easily found by typing july wakes into the very useful "Digitrad and Forum Search", which you will find on the main Forum page.
