Subject: Edward/Brahms From: arnowitt@sover.net Date: 06 Jan 97 - 08:11 PM I am looking for the melody line of Edward to see if Brahms in his piano piece "Edward" created his own melody or was using a melody from a folk source. Brahms mentions Herder's "Stimmen der Voelker" as his source, if that's any help. I have found lyrics galore in many books but need to find sheet music or recordings. Any ideas? -- Michael Arnowitt

Subject: RE: Edward/Brahms From: Jerry Friedman, jfriedman@nnm.cc.nm.us Date: 07 Jan 97 - 03:39 PM The singer and composer (Karl?) Loewe, who was a little before Brahms, wrote a Lied called "Edward". The words are somebody else's translation of the famous Border Ballad: Dein Schwert, war ist's von blut so rot (Why does thy brand sae drip wi' bluid), Edward, Edward... I'm sorry that I'm not capable of writing down the tune from listening to it, so I hope you can find it somewhere. If I had to guess, I'd say it wasn't either a German or a British folk tune. I like the song a lot, by the way. |

Subject: RE: Edward/Brahms From: Susan of DT Date: 07 Jan 97 - 08:32 PM We hope to get the tune playing ability working at this site soon. We have melodies on both versions of Edward in the database (when you see "play.exe" near the end of the entry that means there is a tune. If you download the database to your computer, it will play on your computer's beeper. We are working on getting the tunes to play thru midi at this site. |
